2002 172ph2 - Something missing here...?

  2002 172
Ok so noticed a bit of oil on the drive since returning from holiday this morning. Having a look underneath the engine and not sure if something is missing?! Almost looks like a threaded hole when zooming in on the picture...

Can anybody put my mind at rest or is the oil coverage generally normal?

Cheers!

That is an unusual amount of oil, that is quite a severe leak.

Hard to tell but the coverage would suggest it is coming from higher up.

Thanks for the reply. Car is running fine and I will do some investigating tomorrow. Just hoping to get some advice on here beforehand! Maybe best to clean it off and see where it appears from...?

Yeah get some brake clean and go to town and then inspect it after. It looks like it has been leaking for a while.

Good grief. Did someone open the bonnet and just pour litres of oil all over the bay ?!

Looks that way!! Haha

Engine oil level is fine. Haven't checked the gearbox level yet as this involves taking the air box out?! From what I understand anyway...!

Mine's an early 2002 172 and it has the full undertray. I'm guessing someone has left yours off, I only ask as that could be a mounting point that you pointed out.

I'll jack mine up when I get back from work and take a pic for you.

Did you manage to get under your 172 to have a look pal?

Easy enough, need to drain the box first and then shaft out to change the boot.

Thanks again! From what I can see there are no specialist tools needed to do this? Is it essential to remove the air box to see the inner CV boot?
