2 quick questions.

  AUDI A5 s-sline
I am looking to purchase my first dslr.

i have narrowed it down to two cameras,

the Nikon d3100 or Nikon 5100.

I'm not sure if I will benefit from the extra features of the 5100. So is the jump in price worth it! :).

Also, 2nd question, have any of you purchased from slr hut? If so what at they like?

Cheers guys for all our help and feedback

my missus says 5100 mate as they are alot better and worth the money if you are going for a DSLR :)

she aint bad with a camera either lol

she hasnt purchased from sir hut sadly, hope this helps mate

I wouldn't use them, grey imports so Nikon won't touch it if you have a problem, it would need to go back to SLR Hut. As with many importers it's not clear how they are so cheap (most incorrectly declare goods to evade taxes, which legally you are responsible for resolving)

ahhh right fair enough, thanks for all your feedabck Spinksy92 & ukaskew.

Do you guys know anywhere else i can get a good deal on these two cameras?

I have read that the D3100 is a great starter camera so i may have a look at that intead as most other places are alot more expensive

I have little advice to offer as I have only owned my DSLR for about 2 months, but I got a second hand d3100 with a couple of lenses and I am chuffed with it. I didn't want to spend too much at first so was perfect for me.

i have found this one:
http://www.procamerashop.co.uk/nikon-d5100-digital-slr-18-55mm-vr-kit.html

but im not sure if this comany is an importer as well?

there is a new one with lens on ebay for £375 also comes with 8gb memory card and its nikon 1 year warrranty.

Pro camera shop - http://www.who.is/whois/procamerashop.co.uk - they're hong kong so garuanteed imports.

That ebay link - read their feedback. Many negatives about delivery time and the kit arriving being from the US.

Apply the "if it's too good to be true" theory to buying cameras. You will not get one cheaper brand new than the reputable online places sell.

Have you used either of these cameras ? Held them at all ? Tried a Canon / Pentax / Sony in your budget ?

Get to Currys or John Lewis and use a few if you haven't...

I think the lower spec Nikons don't have autofocus in the body, so you need more expensive lenses if you want AF which might negate any savings you made.

iirc there are only 2 nikons that currently have the auto-focus in the body, the rest rely on the lense having the autofocus

only when buying lenses that wont come with it in... there are a huge range of lenses available out there mate to cover this lack aslong as you make sure when buying a lense it has AF in the lense.

Pro Camera Shop are quite aggressive with regards to getting negative reviews and forum posts removed, but there are still a number of horror stories on the web.

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ lists most reputable stores and their current prices. If you're finding places roughly 20% cheaper than those they are more than likely pre-tax grey import prices (even if they supply a UK address, which many do).

I can't believe I forgot about camerapricebuster. I got my D40 for an absolute bargian through that site back in the day.
