182 engine problem

when i was goin to work this morning i was accelerating and the car suddenly wouldnt pick up any more revs and stuck at around between 3 and 4k even with the pedal stuck to the floor, but once i lifted off and pressed it again it was fine. it done it again coming home only this time once i got it into my drive it was smelling from under the bonnet and was smokin a bit to much out the exhausts. anyone had this before? any help is appreciated
