Personally if I was comparing two cars with the view to purchase,if one had been serviced by Renault and the other by a well known specialist I know which one I would choose.I used to get mine serviced by Renault and they are shite.

Renault are correct to point out the aux belt needs doing, normally they forget that! Forget the cambelt for another 2 years. That price seems about right for Renault.

Copied from a post I made earlier..

Its the belt which takes drive from the engine and turns the alternator, power steering pump, air con compressor and water pump. Imagine how many times this piece of rubber spins round and round, stopped and started, cooled down and heated up. The rubber starts to perish after 2 years.

i had the identical job done at a renault specialist (rentech) last week, cost me £285 and that including having the whole tensioner/bearing thing replaced too. They also kindly diagnosed my headlight washer problem for free too

Personally i'd forget about main dealer service. A renaults stamp will nver make you anywhere near the £2-300 you'll save at an independant garage when you come to sell the car. Would trust rentech alot more then renault too

How old is your car Andy?

Edit: Arse, just noticed it's a 182 so can't be much more than three years old. Another 18mths or so and it might've been worth doing the cambelt at the same time.

but i have warranty issues they need to sort for me.

if i was buying a second hand car i would always go for the one with the renault stamps.

a specialist serviced renault is worth more IMO! i'd be put off buying a renault with a dealer service history!

Can understand people going for the full dealer SH, even if it doesn't make financial sense. Your average Joe buying it next will just think FDSH is best, no matter what the reality.

Only enthusiasts like people on here will appeciate the merits of decent indie specialists.

Some specialists have quite odd names, if i saw it plastered in the service book without knowing who they are i'd be put off!

yep totally agree.

why would you be put off by renault servicing? they make the cars???

right, i used to think like that too, renault service history is best but in reality, it isn't.

I had my clio serviced by rentech for its 36k, it was a third of the price and I got to see Mike do the work, that meant I knew the work had actually been done.

Renault had charged me for a enw pollen filter the previous two services, according to mike it hadn't been changed since new.

You just don't know what theya re doing to your car behind closed doors.

I got to watch Mike change the aux belt and it really can be a tricky thing to do but i felt much better seeing it all being done and safe in the knowledge that a proper service was carried out.

I'd go with rentech if possible, i even drove 100 miles to have it done there.

yes Renault here on the Isle of Man were taken to court for making up problems. Always go to a specialist Andy - Always.

See, they knocked the price down without you having to prove a cheaper quote or anything, that's 125 extra sheets they'd have stung you for.

The majority of them seem to make it up as they go along anyway.

yep i know b******s.

well i did phone ren-o-tec and they can do it for £152 just the belt and the service is £250

so renault chelmford will do the lot for £425

My first 2 servies was done by the stealer because the first one was free and the second i had £150 in vouchers. The rest are being done by a specialist. There several miles away but better and cheaper.

the problem is Renault aren't very good at communicating to the dealers

10W40 oil - yes you can use it (and its dirt cheap) but it says "RENAULT RECOMMENDS ELF" on a sticker on the back window AND in the handbook

i can count the dealerships/independants that use the correct oil with 1 hand!

36K 95% of delaerships think is a minor service

18K 50% of dealers recon thats the service interval on an RS

i can go on
