172 Cup revival

  Clio 172 Cup
Hi,

Been enjoying reading the project threads and got inspired to get stuck into a host of little jobs.

Today was a new tailgate actuator which was a bit fiddly but pretty straightforward.

Yesterday was a quick engine spruce up. It’s not a show car so nothing too extreme.

The rest of the car got a quick clean inside and out at the same time. The bodywork isn’t great with plenty of scratches and dings but it’s a daily driver and regularly parked at the station so not worth fixing up - well not yet anyway.

Thanks Dan.

It looks ok from 12ft but get up close and the paint is pretty ropey.

Your £300 Cup sounds great - I'll be following with interest
I paid £1500 for mine but had to do loads to get it ready for daily duties.

new parts:
accelerator pedal
lambda sensor
battery
battery terminal
exhaust back box
exhaust hangers
spark plugs x4
injectors x4
ARB bushes
x2 rear calipers
brake discs front & rear
brake pads front and rear
braided brake lines
new coolant bottle
new number plate light
tailgate actuator
x1 fog light
windscreen (insurance)
window switch x1
mirror caps x2
track rod ends x2
Cup dampers x4
H&R springs
windscreen washer pump
tailgate damper struts x2
spare key
belts & water pump.
oil & filter
gearbox oil

Then there was the upgrades I couldn't resist:

steering wheel recover
KTech induction
Pure front top mounts
Recaro Evo 7 seats
lower seat mounts

Despite this long list I've shopped around and got the best price for everything so it hasn't cost as much as you might think.
For example:
I picked up the Recaro's with standard mounts for only £300 on Ebay. The recovered steering wheel also popped up on Ebay, a steal for £70. I sold my original wheel for £20, so only £50 down all in.
The accelerator pedal was faulty so I bought a cheap standard pedal for £20 and robbed it for the magnetic tracks (which were worn on my original pedal). Much cheaper than buying a new ally pedal.
I got an incredible deal from RPD on the genuine Cup dampers - all x4 for just £95

I'm sure others have done even better than me on these prices.
If you're patient you can pick up what you need pretty cheaply.

Good luck

That's amazing mate

Not saying it is but I would call it a 30/30 car 30ft away and above 30 mph they look fantastic [emoji1787][emoji1787]

Now that's a lot of work I do love a bargain and that wheel [emoji7]

The clio is my 3rd car so I am in no rush but I just can't help myself only thing really is money holding me back like most of us I would imagine

Keep up the excellent work fella

I used this paint - another EBay find.
Colour match is pretty good.

Some small updates.

Ordered and fitted a 90mm front plate from Pro plates.
I’ve heard of some mixed reviews recently but mine seems ok.

Next job was to tidy up my scabby wing mirrors.
They had obviously been painted badly in the past and looked flat with patchy lacquer.
I bought one complete mirror from Mbeau which even with a couple of light scratches was way better than what I had in the car.
So it went straight on.
I removed the mirror cap from the other side and had a crack at a DIY respray. I reckoned I couldn’t make it any worse.
All in all it came out ok - not a professional standard perhaps - but it definitely looks a lot better.

Considering I leave the car in the station car park (well, I did...) and it will more than likely pick up the odd ding and scratch, it’s just not worth forking out for a proper paint job.
Buoyed by my success the drivers door pull was next. Annoyingly I didn’t take a before pic but it really was looking tatty with flaking lacquer peeling off.
A quick wet dry with some soapy water, a blow over with some more Mondial Blue followed by several coats of lacquer and I’m pretty happy with the result.

Plenty more to do but the big one is a bonnet respray.
Mine is a right state with deeps scratches, rust patches from stone chips and the usual dents.
I’ve got a replacement with no rust or dents but it badly needs new paint.
I’ll not be ‘having a go’ with a rattle can as it’s just too big so will get a quote to do it properly.
Onwards and upwards
