Apologies for likely going over old ground. My lads car had failed emissions on MOT. Assume likely cat issues as it was previously rattling a while back. Has anyone fitted a non type approved BM cat? (Around 100 quid) I appreciate the type approval issue but wondered what's the difference as 500 quid seems a bit rich for what what I can see is essentially the same one. Cheers.

You might struggle getting it though an MoT with a cheapo cat, have you looked for a good used oe one instead?

Hi Matt. I haven't looked at 2nd hand to be honest as I am loathed to fork out on something that I can't guarantee isn't as potentially shagged as the one on it already. Likely similar age/usage (100k+ mile). Just seems crazy money.

It’s just a bit of a gamble with these cheap cats. Whereas you might find a good original off a low mileage breaker. What car is it for?

I get the gamble as I appreciate there may be a lot less precious metals within it. There doesn't appear to be any fitment issue as they look identical. For 100 quid I might take a punt and if it's just as bad then I'll weigh it in and get a fiver back I guess! It's for a 53 plate 172 cup.
