1.4RT Too Much Fuel To Start

Wotcha,
New to all this sort of stuff, so here goes.
 I have a L plate 1.4RT which suddenly stopped and will not start again.
With the air filter off and looking down the top of the Carb, it chucks a charge of fuel into the top of the carb (i assume to start) then when you try to start it, it continually thrown so much fuel into the carb, it overflows.
If you disconnect the electrical connector which operated the input injector, after the innitial charge is injected, it will start (for a second or so), then whilst running, connect up the connector agian and it will run, but so lumpy it is unbelievable and you need to hold the throttle open to let it run, as soon as you let it go, it will stall and continue chucking fuel in.
Have replaced the top of the carb, but no change.
I am inclined to think it is something electrical, but not too sure.
Any pointers in the right direction would be most appreciated.
Ta
Mike
