£801 Cambelt

  Formally Clio 182
You got to be f**king kidding me right?

Renault have quoted me £801 for a cambelt.

How the hell can a rubber belt being put round your camshaft, crankshaft, and all other other pulleys possibly cost that much.

I respect these garages mechanics need to make a living but seriously... most of that cost is labour and not the part and I really don't think it would take that long.

So... how long does it actually take to do and what is the average cost for an hourly rate to do this and for the genuine part itself?

Sorry for the rant, but finding that sort of money right now is tough and it's irritating because I'd love to have it done in a couple of months when due because my car is my pride and joy.

Wow, that is ridiculous, that garage must be struggling.

Isn't the normal price around £400.

The part is only just under £100 AFAIK

Madness..i had mine replaced with the dephaser pulley, oil change and spark plugs for £300.

Buy it belt yourself and take it to a good garage!

i'm doing mine myself, granted i'm only changing the cambelt and not the pulleys, but for a cambelt and a ax belt it cost me 36 squids on the dot and the crankshaft tool kit cost me 47.50 from bennetts that includes delivery and me and my old man reacon its gonna take abot 5-6hours, thatsabout 2hours taking all the bumpers and arch linings and stuff out and jacking engine, then an hour or so taking ax belt and kit off to swap belt and then a few hours putting everything back, seriously, they having your pants down at that price, tell them where to stick it and go to a different garage, read my thread at bottom this guy says his mate will do it for 250 and he's a renault technician http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=453336

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Don't do it yourself if you haven't done anything like this before. The pulleys/vct system isn't 'locked' so it's very easy to bend some valves by saving yourself a small amount over going to someone who can do it.

JMS are great - go there. Most impressed! Other than that, any of the specialists are fine. You've got to jack the engine up off it's mounts and allsorts, and I'm sorry but that's a bit too far for me to mess with.

I personally can't see the point in doing all what you're doing and not fitting the entire kit :S

To buy all the parts from Renault costs just under £200 iirc.... So how's your mate going to do it for £250??

Amazing how Renault dealers vary in price.

I got mine done for £750 from my local R/dealer INCLUDING water pump, and dephaser pulley.

I was quoted £400 for belts at Renault and then £400 for the rest of the service, inc. filters, fluids etc.....

AFAIK the stealership way of doing the work is to strip down the front end of the car to get to it, hence about 6 hours work (when it can be done without apparently). They told me they'd need the car for a day and a half too.......yeah right, going to get my belts done at a local specialist instead!

Our 182 is due for a cambelt next June but I would prefer to get it done now, I'm really not sure who to use tbh.

I did get a laugh earlier ringing round for a price on a second service for the 197, Sutton park in Rugby wanted £308 inc VAT lol.

Will he be able to stamp my service book? its just that imo unless you get it stamped, and by a reputable firm you are knoking £500 off the price of your car if you come to sell it :(

I must be missing something here, but why would you go to Renault, when theres plenty of specialists (on here or not) that are sure to be cheaper and probably better to deal with than going to a dealer?

In my case because the nearest specialist was roughly a 300 mile round trip away and the difference was only 50 quid iirc. Add the petrol into the equasion and time off work, it would have cost me more going to a specialist so simply wasnt worth it.

Some Renault garages can be pretty reasonable, some are very over priced. Like anything, shop about and do the maths

I ain't got the money to take it to a specialist, plus my old mans done loads of cambelt before and we gone through the whole proccess that is explained on the CS guide and he looked and said lets do it this weekend, so he's confident plus i've ordered all the tools for changing the cambelt, all i can say is i'll document the whole thing and post it on here, well if it goes right lol but i'm confident with alot of patience we'll get through this, i wouldn't dare do this if my dad had any doubts so i suppose i was running my mouth a bit saying do it yourself soz :dapprove:

All I get when I go to that site is a black screen saying Welcome to JMS tuning.
