£700 service bill!

My brother has a 172 sport and loves it apart from the usual renault/french build quality issues. He just got it serviced and they said his driveshaft gaiter seal (or something :p) had gone! The cars under warranty but they said it wasnt covered and with every thing else on the service its ended up costing £700!

I was just wondering if this was a common fault because Im very confused to why they were looking in the drive shaft on a normal service?

Any help would be fantastic :)

Cheers, Ade :)

Normal service = ~£160

So they want 440 for a driveshaft gaiter ?? wtf ?

how old is the 172 ?

thanks for the reply. he also had brake discs fitted for £200 odd so the gaiter would of cost around £300-360.

I told my brother that Id of fitted the discs myself if they really needed doing (which I dont think they did). But he hasnt learnt to stand up to dealerships yet like I have (being a ford owner lol ;)).

The cars an 02 reg mk2 172.

on one hand hes getting ripped off, wotever needed replaceing coz u can always do it yourself for the price of the parts.

on the other hand, its a fairly new car and on kinda has to be done like this if he wants a decent service history.

1 main reason i wouldnt buy a spanking new car unless i could afford the dealership overpricing service, or take it to a specialist. either way, its a kick in the nutz.

Do they normally phone you and tell you that this would need doing?

Or would they just do it then tell you to hand over that sort of money??

If you was to say leave it and do it yourself or take it somewhere cheaper would that then void any warranty, i mean do you have to pay them to do all work or your motor for the 3 years??????

Well the price for the gaiter would have been because of the labour to strip down to the driveshaft & rebulding. A gaiter only costs a few quid.
Depending how bad the damage to the gaiter was, it might have been repairable with superglue.

They normally do ring you up to ask if you want the damaged parts fixing/replacing. But might not tell how much it would cost unless you ask them.
The car will remain under warranty if you do the work yourself, but you have to use genuine Renault parts.
