    New valeo alternator faulty?

Just fitted a new 75A valeo alternator to my 172 cup, and it seems to be discharging the battery when the ignition is off. The battery has discharged from 12v to 3v when parked up for 3 days The alternator charges at 14.1v but a can hear it humming under the bonnet when the ignition is...

    Funny Noise on Full Lock

Check the level of your pas fluid, mine did this, the power steering sensor was leaking and the fluid was low. New sensor, new fluid, problem has now gone away. Fluid was dexron II from Halfords

grr, my 182 sounds like a scooby- miss fire

Check to see if you have condensation in the spark plug wells, i had this last week. Dried up the leads/plugs and the problem is solved. Try this before spending money on coil packs/leads/injectors etc.

KTR Uprated Engine Mounts - Lots of vibration

I have these, if fitted properly, they do not cause extra vibration when on the move. But they do increase vibration at idle and when sitting at traffic lights they can be unpleasant. I am used to them now, but after driving the works van, it feels a bit overkill. If i was doing it again, i...

H&R coilover spring rates vs Bilstein b14

Can anyone tell me the spring rates for H&R coilovers for the 172, compared to Bilstein B14's please. I believe that the Bilsteins run 70nm front and 40nm rear. I know that H&R use the Bilstein struts, but specify different spring rates. I would like to know how much softer they are, as my...

    182 turbo

Sorry, i have just seen the ebay advert and spoken to the guy on the phone. There was mention of a flatspot and the cracked log manifold, and it needs a new bonnet if you are fussy. I guess ktec must have mapped the standard ecu when it was installed. The car does drive and is running, how well...

    182 turbo

I just had a look at this, not a bad base car to do further work on. Realistically its going to need putting on a gen 90 and mapping, i would imagine that would cost £1500. If you already own a clio, its probably better to do what clio172T has done, rings, new clutch, new turbo and a...

    which tyres are best?

I bought them a few months ago, they came off a set off pro race 1.2 wheels that had run for 500 miles, they have 7mm at least. Quite surprised as i was expecting them to be PS3's. I'm really wondering if they are superior to PS3's, as i was very disappointed in them; as far as wear was concerned.

    which tyres are best?

I find the pzero nero better on my cup than the michelin ps3. I think that the michelins are overpriced for the grip that they offer. The michelins lasted 4500 miles on the front and whilst good in a downpour, i didn't think they offered anything special in the dry and the compound seemed soft...

    Cooksport Springs

The ride height is perfect for 16" wheels, a much better option than coilovers, if you want to retain your ride comfort.

    Bilstein B14 Rebuilds?

Ben, rebuild costs are £80 +vat per strut. My turnaround was 2 working days. Car is now good as new now, definately worth rebuilding. They are not unique in needing a rebuild, very much like the sachs.

    which exhaust-suggestions please

The renault system is very restrictive to keep the noise down, i believe the centre section and cat flow well, but the backbox is the bottleneck. I think Danny at 519 runs a 21/4" system on his itb 172, he doesn't like exhaust noise. Having run both 21/4 and 21/2" centre sections, i could not...

    which exhaust-suggestions please

I would really have liked to buy a BTB ninja, but they were far more expensive, and i don't think many were produced. I think that may have been a perfect replacement for the renault exhaust, excellent build quality and no droning. It really depends if you can tolerate an exhaust that is...

    which exhaust-suggestions please

Bill, shame your so far away from prospeed. I much prefer mine to my old BTB. The fabrication is not as good, but its not made on a jig and will be done in three hours. If you don't like the noise, charlie is more than happy to adapt it to your requirements. I went back twice to get it to my...

Looking for a Decent Socket Set

Don't bother with the vortex system, the sockets are very thin walled and i have broken two ratchets. Bahco do some very basic, but solid 1/2" sets for £55, likewise i rate facom ratchets and sockets. The halfords professional range is far superior to the vortex system, which i believe is...

    RDH's R56 Cooper S

Stick to something sensible, like the equivalent of eibach pros on a clio, if you must lower. Sometimes fiddling with the ride height can really compromise the handling on rough roads, and you just won't make progress as well as a car with a little more arch gap. It really doesn't look bad at...

    RDH's R56 Cooper S

Excellent review, be very careful with the lowering. Suspension travel really makes a daily car bearable. If you lower it too much you may find you don't like driving it as much as the current setup, your 182 really looked fantastic, but i imagine it could be a pain driving in town? The mini...

    new KTR induction Kit

Tommy, i had the same problem when i fitted a v6 airbox to my cup. The rs tuner map improved the response with the v6 box, without the map the car was awful. I would suggest you either try the rs tuner route or get it mapped at ktec/rs tuning/tdf.

Ride quality on 2118's vs Turinis

Yes, the ride height on the b14's ,makes quite a difference. Not much point in lowering the car to suit smaller diameter rims and finding that the ride compliance is ruined. Best to ask for experiences first, rather than carry on regardless.

Thanks for the advice, i can finally fitted some reasonably priced Michelin PE2's now.

Ride quality on 2118's vs Turinis

I am going to be changing my standard turinis to 2118's next month and i am after some advice. My car is currently running B14's and is dropped only 30mm, to make it complaint as a daily. I understand that the car will need further lowering when the 2118's are fitted, otherwise the arch gap...

    running issue when cold

I think it is just the map, i believe it overfuels at startup. This happens on my car and i also changed all the sensors bar the map. It is fine after 5 minutes. When i had the rstuner map running, this problem disappeared. I think it ignores lambda readings for a preset time. Since the map...

    ph1 172 Gearbox ?

Ph1 jc5-089 ph2 172 cup jc5-129 Both speedo drive, ph1 box has slightly longer ratios, a little less acceleration, but higher top end. I think the phase 2 182 is a jc5-130 - no speedo drive

Is that Bradwell power station? Very nice car, especially the 45 degree exhaust tip.

172 Standard sounding exhaust - stainless steel

After i sold the btb, i had the renault system refitted temporarily. It may be restrictive; but it is a pleasure to drive a quiet car if it is a daily. If i didn't have cams,i would have stuck with the standard system and bought a second hand one when it fell off. You may be better off trying...

172 Standard sounding exhaust - stainless steel

I had a BTB stealth 2.5" system, i found it too loud. I then went to prospeed and had a sports cat/ 2.5" system with a large backbox to keep the noise down, I found this too loud, so charlie fitted a chamber into the backbox, this helped a little. I then had the 2.5" centre silencer removed...

172 Standard sounding exhaust - stainless steel

BTB Ninja, very nice but expensive. You are probably better off getting a custom 2 1/4" system if you want it quiet, i changed my centre section from 2.5 to 2.25" and it quietened it down a lot. I find 2.5" a little droney on the motorway, but i'm getting old.

    Bilstein B14 coilovers - creaking

Mine knocked when coming to a stop at traffic lights and when doing u turns. I also noticed it when pulling up onto my drive. The drivers side had more play in it than the passenger side, both needed a rebuild. Adam, at least you have a warranty, if it turns out to be a failed strut then try...
