New clutch kit fitted, idle knocking

  182
Hi I have recently (3 weeks) had a new genuine clutch kit fitted and now I have this horrible knocking sound, I noticed the tapping at first only ever at idle not in gear. The noise which completely goes away when you press the clutch pedal down, and comes back when you release the pedal. The car drives smooth and no knocking in any gear, but just this horrible rattle I have taken it back to the garage (Renault specialist) they put it over the pit to have a look, they believe the noise resides within the gearbox and not the new clutch kit that was fitted. I’m now stuck as for them to strip it all down and for it not to be the clutch then I will have to pay lots of labour for them to tell me I need a gearbox. The gearbox never made this noise at all before the new clutch kit was fitted 100%
I don’t know what to do I believe it something relating to the clutch but I don’t know, I’ve not read anywhere over the years of the gearbox rattling at idle but goes away when clutch pedal pressed??
I have attached a video of the sound. The pedal is being pressed and released, you hear the noise when the pedal is released. Does anyone have any idea of what it can be or what I can do? Thank you so much for your help

Thank you for your reply I appreciate that. I do feel a bit fobbed off from the garage, initially they said about having it in and stripping it down, as I said they looked underneath and checked some bolts, which they said is fine?? They believe the problem is in the gearbox but I don’t believe them. Thanks again

It was a brand new kit from RPD bought 1 month ago and fitted 3 weeks ago. Could the fault lay within the new kit or the fitment of said parts. If I can prove it’s either the clutch kit at fault or a fitting error then I can get it sorted for free. If I get it wrong and it’s the gearbox then they will charge me labour. How can I rule out the gearbox?

@NorthloopCup what do you reckon?

I've never heard a box rattle like that.
Well that’s an interesting noise! If it drives with no whines from the box, it can only be the clutch.

And why they didn’t look inside the bell housing through the clutch fork opening is bemusing. It’s literally just a case of disconnecting the cable, pop the rubber out and see what you can see inside.

Thank you for your help again everyone. For a bit of context, about 1.5 years ago my gearbox developed a whine in 5th gear only due to low oil, I topped up the oil and the whine remained but settled now. I have never had and crunches in any gears or especially tapping at idle. I decided to get the clutch kit fitted to my existing box. This knocking noise was never heard until I had the clutch kit fitted. The garage says it didn’t make that noise when they fitted the clutch kit, I’m telling them and you all that it never made this noise before the clutch kit was fitted. They also fitted a new selector shaft seal kit. As it is now the car charges gear lovely and any whine in 5th is barely noticeable, I get no clattering noise in any gear but only on idle with the foot is off the clutch pedal.
Not for the Clio but the internet suggests it could be an input shaft bearing, could that be the problem? If that was the problem would it not show symptoms in other ways? I already said it drives smooth and nice, nothing to suggest there is a problem anywhere?? When I took it in I couldn’t select reverse gear but got to the garage ok. I have included pictures of my old clutch, the rust is just where it has been outside for the last few weeks. Would the damage on this clutch have caused damage in the gearbox, even though it drives fine nice and smooth etc??
I’m going to take the car to a local gearbox specialist and ask there opinion also a couple of other garages and see what they say. Hopefully if they/we can all agree that it’s not the box but the clutch, then I can go back and tell them what others have said
Thank you so much 🙏

The clutch I had replaced, the release bear would make a noise when the clutch pedal was pressed down. This problem now is the other way round.
A completely different noise to the knocking is was more screechy

If the input shaft was bad then is it wrong to assume that the person fitting the clutch would pick this problem up? It would be able to get overlooked would it?

Hi hoping someone explain what this part circled in red is and where about it fits in with the clutch kit

I’m wondering if this part is missing or incorrectly fitted, would it cause the clatter noise?
Still trouble shooting :-/ lol

Regarding trouble shooting.. I’ve noticed that car engine running, foot off the clutch, if I move the gearstick as if putting it into any gear (little bit of force), with the gearstick say held over at 5th, 1st etc the clatter noise will either stop or reduce or become louder. So I haven’t touched the clutch pedal at all, so could that then mean that it’s more likely gearbox related as the garage suggested?? I don’t know.. I will get a second opinion when I get a chance. I have driven the car a lot recently and it drives fine changes gear fine smooth clutch change nothing to suggest that anything is broken ??

Is there a way to inspect the guide tube or release bearing from going in through the clutch fork area? Remove the boot and use a probe/ screwdriver down there to see if there is any play in the guide tube or release bearing? I won’t do it as I don’t know what im doing but is that something that can be done?
Thanks again
