i always used to switch it off on the 172 if i was planning on going fast specially at lights etc.. not sure if it was psychological but seemed to go better turned off..
the esp/tc can apply brakes and/or limit engine power, and even though the light is meant to come on when it does anything...
my 182 comes good noticable about 1 minute after starting up.. the 172 before took about two minutes.. there was certain place down the road where i would think, yep about now itll... woooooaaahh there she goes

While I think I can drive more safely than the average person at say 90mph (where appropriate), by definition half people are below average. So that makes setting a legal limit problematic, and its going to be slower than some people can safely drive.
