ktec cam upgrade?

Do you think its worth spending 1800 on a cam shaft upgrade by ktec racing down Dorset

Is it due belts? If it is then its a good excuse to add cams while its there.

Also there are other companies who offer that service of cams, belt change etc.

What cams are you getting for that price apart from the cam & aux belt kits fitted as well as a remap .

Cheers lads he said for 1800 he wud supply and fit 438 cams cam belt and kit aux belt and kit water pump and coolant plus a ktec induction kit and a remap before and after

These clios go for nowt these days but I have 2 grand init already so I am thinking of makingit into a project

Sounds like you have made your mind up. There are other traders closer who could sort it all for you though if you would prefer not to travel that far. BTM could supply and fit everything and RS Tuning could do the mapping at Leeds.

Don't fall into the trap of N/A tuning mate. Save up and go for a turbo conversion or charger. You only need another £1200 for a drive in drive out 230bhp turbo conversion.

Don't get me wrong, cams will make it more responsive and they do have their place but to have £1800 quid in your pocket other options are far far more desirable.

I was disappointed with cams to be honest.spend all that money and its not really as fast as I thought it would be

What trap? There's nothing at all wrong with N/A tuning. Boost isn't for everyone. :)

RS tuning could supply and fit everything too, Leeds is a bit closer to Newcastle!

Plus the map is far more likely to actually be good.

But its a lot of money for pretty modest gains, its still not going to be a fast car.

Fair point about the mod's - one is never enough - but I still maintain boost is not for everyone. :) I'll have to get myself one of those t-shirts as I've fallen into the trap of spending thousands on a forged / high-comp N/A build when I should have done the 'proper' thing and gone boost. :rofl:

When the 172/182s are turbo'd can the rev limiter be lifted as much as it can on the same n/a engine when its tuned? Or isnt there any point as it will run out of puff higher up the range?

Im asking this because ive had turbochrged cars for the past 5-6 years now and before this i wasnt really into tuning as much.

Im really liking the power delivery of the clio how its all top end and you have got to keep it over 5k, its so much more fun imo, but im thinking of when i decide to tune which route to take.

I know forced induction will be quicker but i dont want to loose the fun factor of all the power at the top end of the rev range :)

My turbo revs to 7500rpm and at 7000 it is still making 255bhp.

But whats it making at peak power and at what rpm is it making it?

As i said i know overall a turbo car will be quicker but i dont like the way they tail off in power and torque towards the end of the range, i like to drop it a gear and rev the ballax off it, its so much fun.

Could mapping or using a different turbo get you a graph that keeps rising in power and torque until the limiter or is that not possible? Or is supercharging one to think about if you want this type of power delivery but still with worth while gains?

You will struggle to get a set up that will keep the torque raising to the red line, maybe with a massive turbo but it would be pretty rubbish on the road and not much would happen till about 4-5k revs. With a supercharger the bhp will peak pretty much at max revs.

Back on topic, I have had cams and while they are good and make the car more fun to drive it will only be slightly quicker than a standard (mapped car), if you want fast then you need boost.

LOL - Are you running throttle bodies as well or just cams and high comp forged bottom end?

Iv got a bottom end sitting waiting on high comps going in :eek:

im with most of the guys in here, save a bit more for forced induction.

if you are set on cams however, and they do give a nice gain in drivability and response, its just not for everyone spending that sort of money for that over pure horsepower. I would personally be considering one of the other guys, ive never personally had any work done by k-tec and ive used and only got good things to say about their mail order service, but im one of these guys who does a LOT of research and looks for experiances from people who have used a company before I spend my hard earned cash with them (that's why ill be using RS Tuning for my Twingos next map with bigger injectors), and theres just too much bad press and experience going about with K-Tecs mapping.

I'm running ITB's as well mate, although I've ditched the K-Tec DTH kit and gone for a Fred/BTM spec Jenvey setup (which I don't know the spec of myself yet!) LOL!

Regarding my replies in this thread, I'm just playing Devil's advocate more than anything really. I've got nothing against boosted Clio's whatsoever (I was blown away when in Chip's turbo'd 172 recently - f'kin' awesome!) but I am simply one of the few who prefer the N/A way. Yeah, it's pi$$ing money away and you're never going to get anywhere near the figures the boost-crew get but I'm not after that personally. :) I guess it ultimately comes down to whether or not you are after a decent hike in power. If not, spend the hefty lump of cash and get the cams, but be realistic that there's only going to be a very mild power increase; albeit with potentially improved response and drivability.

So, a high-comp bottom end you say?! LOL! *thumbs up*

Fred spec - ask no questions and just drive (eventually!) I'll call you next week, the rebuild starts soon ;)
