Awesome build.

Think i saw a mazda at trax today with cooksport on the side? Which sounded utterly mental. It could of said something else though lol.

Hopefully it will be epic once it's done :)

Will be interesting to see how the block takes those sort of power levels, Ive had issues with the block cracking on other engines I have built at that sort of power level and the F4RT block doesnt seem especially generous with regards to the amount of metal between the bores etc.

Making the power is a piece of cake, its wether or not its reliable thats the issue.

Have you measured the wall thickness or are you just going in blind and hoping for the best?

If I am dealing with a new engine Im not familiar with and looking for big power, what I do is get a spare block and just keep boring it out bigger and bigger till I break through, so that I can see if there are any obvious weak points.

As sometimes (a series mini for example) you can end up with a better wall thickness if you offset the bores very slightly as the standard bore location isnt always the optimum one with the casting.

So what have you done in terms of block strength then, cause its certainly not pinned or anything on those pics, looks to be totally standard in fact.

Just dont loose sleep over it. We want to push the standard block to see what its capable of, as with the gearbox, crank etc.

So thats what we are doing.

Sadly my experience of renault engine components is that there is a massive variation between them, tyhe quality assurance process seems to be typically french by nature, so even if you find out all about your particular parts, if you try and then replace them with other standard ones, you'll get entirely different failure points the next time.

Fingers crossed the blocks are stronger than they look, I guess at least with being a race car it will be pretty limited in terms of the number of times it heat cylces etc, so not like trying to do the same on a road car in that respect, although conversely of course during use the loads are typically higher even if only for short durations.

This is our road car. Ultimately the engine will end up dead, its the whole point in pushing it to see what breaks first. My bet is the crank or block (probably block), but lets see if we can hit 700bhp before that happens ;)

The cranks actually seem pretty good, although obviously the long throw means there is a lot of leverage on them so the centre line is under quite a bit of strain, but compared to a lot of other engines the fully skirted design of the bottom of the block and the way that the cam caps are located within it gives the crank a real fighting chance as there should be relatively little movement of the mains caps.

Will be interesting to see how you get on.

Agreed, the renault tuning world is pretty stagnent, I cant think of many turbo engines that have been around for that long and its still not relatively common to see one with 600bhp+ TBH

Dunno about stagnant, definitely socially inactive lol. Still have a couple of chums with high powered R5's down this way. Don't see many high powered Meganes though, I only know of a few 300bhp ones.

Yes the older engines seemed to get the treatment, quite a few of the old pushrods doing good numbers for what they are.
And in fact its scoff from that background thats pushing the F4RT more than most at the moment too.

Yeah there's a lot of old faces still in the game, I think a lot of them just seem quiet now days due to the Renault Sport kiddies climbing in numbers. Like me :eek:
