I've just broken down and it sounded expensive

  172 Ph1, 1972 Mini 1
Come on Tom, take £1500 (or less) of this mans money, fix his beloved car and watch him come back every month with his wages to buy more bits.

You know you will get all of his work from now on!

haha, thanks :)

Less preferably ;)

I just bought 5 scratch cards for £5 on the off chance that Karma does exist. I won £1. So, in my search for funds to repair my car I am currently at -£4.

I suppose I've got to laugh about it really!

I'd prefer a 182 engine if possible, unless there is any reason why this makes no difference?

I called the gumtree add earlier and it's sold already.

I just called the first eBay link you mentioned, they've got a 182 engine coming in next week for £800+VAT, seems expensive.

All 1*2 engines are the same and interchangable. You'll have to swap the plenum and rocker cover over tho as the're different.

I got an engine from these guys once. Very reasonable and comes with warranty! They even shipped across the pond for 20 quid more!

What about the second link offer £500 for it then sell all the ancillaries and manifolds etc so your left with the bare block and use that? you would get £200 for manifolds inlet and exhaust alternator starter etc

I don't really understand, sorry. I don't know enough to be able to sort stuff like this out, I don't want to spend £500 on something only to find I don't have a replacement part for the actual bits which are broken. If that makes sense?

buy the black one, strip it of all its ancillaries and manifolds etc so your left with a complete bare engine, give the bare engine to jms they will remove your bent engine strip that put all your ancillaries and manifolds etc off your 182 onto the 172 engine.

you will have all the ancillaries and manifolds etc to sell then to make some money back?

Buy the complete engine with evrything on it (alternator starter etc.) Use the new engine with all the other bits from your car. Then sell the bits you have left over?

Should get alot back from it! So the enginer actually costs you around 300! Ask the mechanic to keep the bits you have spares of. Then post them up here and we'll help ya work out rough prices?

Ok thanks guys. When I get the quote from James@JMS I'll give him a call to talk through the above. If I can keep back some bits and bobs which are working to sell then that would be great.

As a rough guide, you should have left over

Alternator £50
PAS Pump £50
Air Con pump £40
Manifold Inlet £50
Exhaust Manifold £100
Coil Pack and Leads £20

Gives a total of £310 approx back!

^^^ exactly  plus its got proof of belts being done but would do them again anyway, selling the spares will pay for that

and you will have a starter motor, another £30 you could get for that

Cheers dude.

I think you meant this one didn't you? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Breaking-Rena...CarParts_SM&hash=item2ead0eaf31#ht_972wt_1165

I'd prefer a 182 engine if possible, I'll consider 172s in a week or so if I've had no luck. Ideally would want one with less miles on it as well.

Correct me if I am wrong but the engines are the same mate and I think it's the manifold plus something else (memory loss) that classes it as a 182 (just stick your existing bits on). 172 & 182 has the same F4R engine.....

Same engine! Just the inlet manifold and the rocker cover differ. O and the bracket on the back of the block for the driveshaft.

I would need a Ph2 172 engine though, right?

I'm near to finalising a deal on a 182 engine. It's expensive, but low mileage and comes with 3 month warranty, so I'm thinking I'll take the hit on the expense for that extra peace of mind.

I've confirmed everything with JMS, so the car will hopefully be picked up this week.

The engine I should have sorted this week as well, and they quoted about 2 days for delivery. So depending on when JMS can fit things in I am hoping to have it back on the road next week. It'll be like getting a new car all over again!

Good times :) . Be careful of James @ JMS. He's got "issues".

Haha! What "issues" are we talking of?

I'll be round to hear that RS192 when it's back up and running mate, if that's ok with you? Shame I won't be able to afford one after all of this :(

Thats unfair Joe.

Being completely club footed at football isn't an 'issue'.....its a disability.

Thank you Ollie! Shame I don't get a blue badge to park on double yellows :dapprove:

I wanted nothing more than to be part of your super cool football team.....

Not :rasp:

An engine has been bought, delivered this week hopefully.
JMS are picking the car up tomorrow.

Things are moving :)

Tom and James at JMS have been awesome so far.

Yeah, things are moving along.

JMS picked the car up yesterday (not sure if it was James or Tom who went down) so it is currently with them in Uxbridge. The engine has been purchased. I paid a little more than planned for this, but it came from a car with 41k on the clock, it's having a full diagnostic check (whatever this is) before it's sent to JMS and it comes with a 3 month warranty.

Unfortunately they aren't going to be able to get the engine out of the car until tomorrow, and with the bank holiday weekend I don't think it will be with JMS until Wednesday next week.

James is very busy at the moment because of the French Car Show, but he said that he should be able to prep the car ready for the engine. Not sure when he'll be able to finish up all the work though, hopefully by the end of next week :)

Engine is on its way out of the car :)

It's dropped an intake valve, so a bit of a mess inside!

Cheers for the update Tom. I know I keep saying this but I am really impressed with how you guys have helped me out. I'll definitely be singing your praises after this :)

What happens with the engine afterwards? Is it worth me getting it picked and and sent to my place?
