Alan, Ali and Ally’s day of detailing

After collecting my new (to me) car 3 weeks ago I’ve been gagging to get the paintwork into decent condition. I’m the 3rd owner of the car, but looking at the paintwork I’m guessing there’s never been much in the way of detailing done on this car: paint was dull, had quite a lot of residues (tree sap, bird sh*t) and was entirely covered in light surface scratching from multiple car washes. Despite all that the colour does a lot to hide all this, but I wasn’t happy with it.

It really needed a full detailing, but I just couldn’t face hand polishing it. But the buff(ing) team of Alan and Ali came over yesterday and got stuck in around my Ibiza. I’d clayed the entire car with Sonus green clay prior to them arriving, so it was all set for a bit of PC polishing to get ride of the washing scratches and minor imperfections. After one pass it was looking damn good already, and a second attempt on the spoiler didn’t yield any better results so we left it at that. This was followed by a coat of CG Blitz sealant (Ali and Alan can correct any errors I’ve made about products used), left for about an hour while we got scran, then buffed off and a layer of Megs #16 (I think) was added to finish it off. CG Rim wax and trim gel finished it off just as it started pissing it down…

Gotta say a big thanks to Ali and Alan – top job guys and thanks for taking the time over it. I really couldn’t have done this (particularly the polishing) by hand and it’s given me a great base to start from now. It’ll be so much easier to maintain now that it’s had decent preparation. I wasn’t able to get any decent “after” pics because it started p’ing it down, but I’ll post up more when I do. But here’s some to start it off…

PMSL! It was dusted off especially!!! ;) - Worth a giggle!

Ally, glad your happy with it mate, got to be honest, i would of liked another bash at it with a stronger compound. VAG paint is a pain in the tits! But it did feel and look alot better.

Loving some of those pics! You got my big nose in the shots! ;)

Had it a week today mate...just under 600 miles on the clock so far.

I didn't mean to buy an R27 as i was originally looking at the standard 197 but i got a really good deal on trade in for the 182 so i couldn't really knock it back lol

I took it a proper run on sunday with the Scottish lot, it feels a lot more composed than the 182 ever did at speed on the twisty bits, it seems to cruise a lot better too, 6th gear is ace.

The suspension on the R27 and 182 are worlds apart, the 182 was good but the R27 set up is sublime IMO.

The Recaro's make the experience so much better as i always felt the standard 182 seats lacked in comfort and support when 'pressing on'.

The Breambo's are stunning, pretty fade free, i was still running factory standard discs and pads when i traded the 182 in with 17,200 miles on the clock.
The 182 brakes always felt good but on runs i've done in the past over similar roads to what we done on sunday it did lack after braking hard 4/5 times.

Downside, the mpg is a good bit less than the 182 by about 5/6mpg but i'm not going to go on about that as its a hot hatch not a diesel hack.

I'm very happy with the results, I got a chance to see it in sunshine this morning (very unusual LOL) and it was gleaming. Being a second-hand car that's not had the best previous attention to the paintwork, I don't expect it to be perfect, but it's damn good

Got some pics I took today uploading as I type, will post them in a few mins.

O, and Alan did you use the spot pad throughout? How long per panel if you dont mind me asking, number of passes etc...

Taken literally on the run as I left the house for work this morning (camera lens had a few watermarks on it, doh):

And I just got caught in a shower on the way home, but most of the water had beaded off by the time I arrived home:

As its VAG paint its really tough, some areas required up to 10 passes to remove some of the 'brush' marks on the wings and doors.

crackin results, STILL need to do mine, its finding the time!

Ally fancy a run some time in the future?

Aye, sounds good. I might be heading up to Knockhill on Friday for the Hot Marques even - been offered a few pax laps in an Elise, but I'm springing for a ride in the Murcielago that's a regular up there...

Kenny: nah, no pics taken last night, weather was shight

Yeh, thats the thing, the vee wasn't cared for at all and i have to live with that! But i'd made the best of what i had.

Forgot to say for those who care, roof was done with Laserbuff321 on an orange edge pad 5' - The spiderweb we were using wasn't enough imo

When the sun comes out it would be nice to see some reflection shots.

The drift bears are happy to do any detailing jobs, just drop us a PM.

How much?

Price depends very much on the condition of the car. Obviously me and alan are based up here, so only local jobs!

I made nothing out of the job - After driving across in the vee and using products... but to be honest i enjoy doing it, i wouldn't have done it if i was worried about money! :)
