Cheap 197?

Looks a good deal to me considering the low mileage on the new engine etc.

They are coming down in price generally now anyway though.

They seem to have dropped quite a bit over the last couple of months, i found about 4 months ago you couldnt really pick up a decent one for under 5k?

I'd love something like that, but sure I could cope without all luxuries and extras I have in the Passat. Wish I could afford to run both :(

They are great value. They just come across as very expensive to run! Tax, insurance and Mpg is shocking.

Running costs of a much more higher grade car imo.

Tax and insurance is by the by. Any 3 door 2.0 petrol car would be the same. MPG is a joke for the performance but unless you're doing 15k a year or more, it's largely irrelevant.

I appreciate what you say about a higher grade car, but there are very few standard cars that are as good on track as a 197/200, yet can happily accommodate 2 adults, two children, a buggy and some shopping.

Agreed if doing lots of miles.

However if doing lots of trackdays they are quite cheap to run, generally quite reliable, not too expensive to get bits for, not horrific on clutches or tyres etc.


That said, a 182 does both those things cheaper and just as well IMHO

If i could afford it i'd go for a 197 ... i do love my Ph1 but sometimes wish i could have a tad more luxury and comfort.. tax and insurance cant be much more than a 1*2 surely? insurance isnt that much for me but fuel costs could get a tad high as a daily drive

That said the ph1 could be at that level with a bit of work/restoration

That is really cheap!

They will be dropping lower than the mk2's if they keep going.

Corsa vxrs seem to be holding their value better, and they depreciate faster than i can sat "A"

Fair points guys. I'd love an Albi Blue one. Amazing colour in the flesh.

The gearboxes also scare me as mentioned.

I keep nearly buying one as I do really like them, then remembering that to do so really we'd have to get rid of the 182, and the 182 is as good or better by almost every metric that really matters to me, and "odds of a big gearbox bill" is one of those metrics, lol.

Tax is the same iirc £250/260, 197s were the cheapest for me to insure across the RS clio range, it's just mpg that let's them down. £30 per week for 150 miles

Well specced ones are holding their value better. It's just the 06 plates with little to no options that are dropping into mouth breather territory

Out of interest, what are the running costs of an impreza? Mpg, fuel per mileage you're doing, services, tyres etc. Pm me if you don't want to spam the thread

I don't mind spamming. The mods are wrapping the dildos up for their girlfriends xmas presents. ;)

mpg for mine is very little. 20mpg I suppose? But then it's not standard. Standard ones I've read achieve 25-30mpg driven like a nun. on a recent (fast!) trip to reading I managed to do £60 of fuel in 160 miles.

Tax and servicing is the same as any other 2.0 petrol car. Cambelts aren't as expensive as a clio, but spark plugs are a complete prick to do.

Tyres (again mine are 18 so not standard) but for V12 evo's I paid £95 a corner fitted.

Fuel is the only thing that makes them expensive to run imo. I can't comment on insurance as I haven't insured a car since about 2001.

Cost wise you'd be mad to swap a 182 for track to a 197. Great if you're using it daily though. Consumables though... £££

At the moment we kind of split cars into:
Track
Both
Daily

The 182 is a "both" car. So it would be in that context it would be in competition for a space on the drive if I got a 197

a standard impreza is the is the same as mine to run with more fasts :(

4wd + turbo for me is circa £1k insurance, not ideal, but not the end of the world.


...then again a fwd + turbo is circa £700, so I recon a focus or meg will be my next upgrade

Standard imprezas aren't that great imo.
No, although in the context of a discussion on what to get I would always assume anyone getting one interested in performance would at the very least get it remapped (if they happen to find one that hasnt been) which does make a significant difference and not cost much.

Yeah I was just trying to compare standard to standard. An R26, whilst more expensive initially, will have more power, be lighter, infinitely better brakes etc etc.

I cant see many people on a car forum being obsessed with keeping a trackday or fast road car standard in terms of the map, even if you are into concours you cant see its been mapped, lol.

Standard imprezas are pretty heavy for their power output imo, they arnt much quicker in a straight line, or if at all than a 1*2 ime.
