Janspeed rusting.

  Clio 182/ RX-8
Ok bought a janspeed s/s cat back for my 182 a couple of months ago. And even though the car has been exposed to the recent s**t weather ive noticed a few rust spots appearing on the tips of the exhaust, and also surface rust appearing on the inside of the tips when they are wet.
Car is washed every weekend without fail so road salt isnt on the car for long.

Anyone else had a similar experience with this exhaust?
Im guessing they may have skimped a little with the stainless they used or possibly a bad batch.
Havent contacted janspeed yet just wanted to see if anyone had/have a similar problem?:)

Stainless does rust, just no where near as much as mild steel, how much it rusts depends on the grade.

The tip may well no be stainless, might be chromed mild steel for example

As you say probably isnt the highest quallity s/steel. Worth contacting janspeed though and taking photos to send them. could probably be tidied up with some metal polish if its not too serious.

you also find some of the cheaper stainless exhausts are welded together using mild steel welding wire.
which rusts fairly quickly

  E46 M3, x2 GTT, RS250
unless its marine grade stainless (316 from memory) it WILL rust

What he said, some stainless is poor quality. Try and stick a magnet to it if it sticks poor quality, but if it does not then high quality stainless and high in carbon.

Im in the engineering trade and specialise in stainless steel so know that they obviously used a cheaper grade of 304 for the tips compared to the rest of the exhaust as i cant find rust anywhere else on the system.

Car is regulary cleaned and i use autosol on the exhaust tips,so it isnt exposed to much road salt etc for too long.

Will contact janspeed next week to see what they say.

Just wanted to see if this is an isolated issue or if everyone with a janspeed fitted has the same problem.
