Is a Cup, 1k better than a PHS 1??

  120d M-Sport
I love my PH1 but would have liked a cup. My mate turned up randomly in a PH1 just before christmas last year and after a quick spin i had to have it and had it the following week, didnt even have a clue about the 172s before i seen mine

But i cant be bothered to change for a car thats basically the same with less equipment and costs more.

But since having mine ive seen loads of PH2 172s but only seen 1 PH1 so that makes me want to keep mine more. Love the gearknob also and iirc the gears are longer in the PH1? 70mph in 2nd

People slate the interior but it really isnt that bad. I didnt buy the car to look at the seats or the dash. The rear bumper will be changed eventually and then thats my car complete i think :D Best of both 172s ;)

yep, gear ratio's are longer in the ph1's, it has its pro's and con's when up against the ph2 guys in a straight line race though

As for the seats.....you sit in them, not look at them, and they have 'propper' rear head rests

Dashboard...meh, it isnt bad, but not as good as the ph2, if the ph1 was perfect there wouldnt have been a ph2

and for the rear bumper, people look at it, not you, so whats the issue :rasp:

Actually a few lads i know think the ph1 rear bumper adds a more sleeper feel as it just looks like a 1.2 bumper painted

Yeah true mate, 172 vs 172 would be almost identical in a straight line race, depends on the driver really. A PH1 might pull a bit on a PH2 at the end of each gear but i guess thats about it.

I agree on the Dashboard statement ;)

I prefer the rear bumper off a PH2 for some reason, just makes it stand out more and a tad more sportier :D

I do agree from behind it looks like a 1.2 with the original bumper and it doesnt look that bad but mine has a crack and loads of marks so the PH2 bumper is needed in my case lol :rasp:

i was taking to a local lad who owed a ph1, said she sold it as it took too much petrol. when i told him mine £20 gets me 140miles on normal driving he was suprised. His ph1 £20 gave him 80miles. I dont understand cos a clio v6 will give atleast 60plus miles

???

My old Phase 1 got 389 miles to a full tank.

Thats between 39-42 mpg, considering its the same F4R engine albeit with subtle differences would suggest he either drove it like it was stolen or it was fucked

  clio rs
he sold it for £2k and a month later it was sold for £1300 so who knows. Dont know if its on here, its a silver Ph1 with white 17inch speedlines and a loud exhaust, apex 40s

I've had both.

Cup, better looking, more comments from non RS owners and better performance, mpg and reliability.

  clio rs
i too think the cup is really reliable, no AC regasing, ABS lights going off, airbags and stuff. Plus u get turinis which most clio owners end up wanting for ther next upgrade

that sounds broke to me

Ive just done 180 miles to £25, 160 of those miles were sat at 90ish mph, and with a de-cat as well :)

But (not being funny) Silver 172's are ten a penny, and are imo the least desirable in the range. When i was looking for a Cup a few months ago, everyone round the 3k mark was either chavved up, 70k+, battered, or no history. That to me isnt decent.

  Ph 1 172
yet again this all down to looks really i own a ph1 becuase i love the look of it ph2 look s**t in my mind to pointy i like buble shapped cars! speed wise there is no diffrence between any of them on the road...track there might be a slight difference but day to day i would rather have AC and the little bits you get with the full fats than the cups

Well each to their own, I wouldnt pay more for a cup than a 'full fat' 172 EVER

problem is people asking completely unrealistic prices for their cars 2nd hand

agreed, a few months back there was loads of cup around the 2800-3500 mark, and they suddenly all went up in asking price :S
Cups are fun to drive, but i wouldn't own one. I'd want more for my money not less

I only get 90miles for £20 but i only do town driving really and drive it like i stole it too lol

Also i agree with Rory & Danny that a Cup is worth no more than a FF172. There may be alot less to go wrong on a cup but there isnt enough equipment to maintain a high price. Granted the colour is gorgeous tho

i wud just for the sake of the turinis - and yes the cup is worth more! thats like saying a 182 is worth same as the trophy when its worth alot more

Dont forget about the Trophys suspention and Recaro seats tho matey there a few quid alone :)

The cup does have turinis and a cup spoiler but lacks the interior and AC and ABS which some people need in there life though so its basically a lightweight 172 for the hardcore racers :D

The Trophy was a special limited run at the end of the 182 run (so they are newer cars in most cases than most 182's), it also came with additions such as the Recaros and the upgraded suspension aswell as the Turinis aswell as the usual luxurys such as AC iirc!

The Cup wasnt a limited run car! It was simply stripped and the only thing it had going for it it over the standard trim car at the time was the fact it had Turinis and come in Mondial Blue!

That being the case, to the average person a 172 Cup wont be worth anymore than the standard car as it wasnt back when they were being sold by Renault!

A £3k Cup will be a complete dog with over 80k...
You need in my opinion £2.5k for a decent PH1 that doesn't need its second cambelt change the following day (many forget these are 10yrs old now).
Decent Cup is £3.5-4k, I looked at a £4k example which was described as minty mint, was average at best, didn't even bother to test drive it.

Indeed - I wouldn't even bother looking at cups cheaper than 4k if I wanted spotless which I would.

The cambelt scenario isnt so much of a problem as you would imagine as people were prety naive about it for the first one so they have only been done in 2007/8 thus meaning it wont need done for a further 72k/5 years.

A bloody big gamble but in saying so...!

I'd have my Ph1 back all day long; I could give or take my Cup.

The Cup is a better car, but it just didn't feel the same as my Ph1. Not sure why...

i perfer knocking abit of the asking price and just get the camblet done myself.

The fact a cambelt might need done doesnt exactly inspire confidence!

Anyone with any car maintenance sense should have it done if/and when needed!

To use it as a bargaining tool fair enough, but i know id rather be bargaining with cosmetic damage than an impending cambelt change?

When I got my 172 I thought should I have got the Cup? After all I did get Turinis, Cup spoiler and Recaro Trendlines for it.

However, I'd still do the same thing again now. I hated the cloth seats on the 172 and would have missed my Xenons, anti glare windscreen, auto lights and wipers. Things in the Trophy I still miss tbh!

There is no performance difference between the Cup and 172 - well I found at most 1 car length when racing (extensively) Mike's Cup. Sometimes less. However, I do think the suspension set up is better, although I've never driven a Cup 'hard' - maybe Mike just has bigger balls in the corners.

you sound like a guy who picks his a** with his finger :nono:

needing a gearbox as its very cruchy, I called up few places.
1st specialist quoted me £280 plus £280 for taking it out and back in , sounded abit dear to me.
Called up another local place they charge £140 for taking out & in. its a normal garage but really good. They say they have someone who will come and refurb or rebuild it but they cant say wat price unless they see it.
Wats the best option to go for

Ha Ha just seen this! Can you please explain to me then why your 'gem' of a 3 grand cup needs a gearbox?!
But I thought a mint Cup could be had for £2.5k.........
