i have just been to my local renault dealer...

  Italian 3.2 V6
and i went and asked about a few little problems i have with my 172..

-1. a/c only blowing hot air...
-2. rear wiper missing
-3. car steams up
-4. whistling noise when going 60 mph+
-5. xenon light not working.

i was told that for no.1 the a/c would most likely need re-gassing!...

for no2. i simply bought a new one..

for no3. i was told this it due to a seal leak in front windscreen (no4. the whistling noise)

so all those seem fine and perfectly fine solutions to those problems but for the last one i was told the bulb wont of gone, it is a problem with the "balast" unit which powers the xenon light.. and i was quoted 180 for that part and quoted labour of 125 which comes to a total of 305 to fix my front xenon..!!!? i thought f**king hell! thats allot of money to get that working again... is this all correct? is there any other cheaper solutions to sorting this problem out!?

little thing that worried me was that he kept calling it a 179 and a 187 lol not a 172... :S haha

thanks.

Dealers...they just sell them, don't know anything about the actual car most of the time. Probably about right for xenons tbh - wouldn't know, I've got a cup!
Mine whistles, and so do all the others I've been in, can't remember why or where it's coming from but don't think it's an issue.

Your best finding a used xenon headlamp on fleebay and fitting that. It's only 3 bolts, although you'll need to take the bumper off to get access, which takes around 15 minutes. Sure there's a 'how to' guide on here? Then sell your old headlamp on ebay as faulty to get a few more ££ back.. :)

Was that Benfields Carlisle??

Iv got that whistling noise and its just the windscreen wipers. On off click at speed will confirm if yours is the same

You went to a dealers?!

Best off seeing a Renault specialist for any problems, unless the car still has warranty, and the work is free.

Nothing wrong with Renault dealers as such. You just have to be clued up so you know if your being stitched up ;)

Cambelt timing thing is a good example where Renault is 'sometimes' best

when I went to a dealer over here, for my 172 to be 'read' by the computer, he drove the car in and said to his collegue:
look at this, a V6
