Dampers Are Back

Well after a month away at BG Motorsport i have managed to get the sachs back.
They have cost me just under £900 to get them refurbished, The reason for this is down to the fact that the last owner drove these with no fluid or gas inside and burst the internals and i had to wait for parts coming from germany, I also got red anodised caps along with full strip down and powder coating along with the Twingo R1 Scrapper Seals drilled in.
Even if i took these else where to get done it would have still cost me a small fortune as the parts would have had to come direct from BG as they are the only authorised Sachs dealer in the UK and people like Cornering Force & Monster Sport get there parts from BG also.
It was either £900 on a overhaul or buy new ones and with the price of them i could not afford that (Picture Below)

Yeah that is just one Sachs Shock for the Trophy. The other side is 8200514734 and that is also the exact same price.

Mine need the same doing. Just trying to justify a £900 bill

Its not £900, A standard refurb from BG with powder coating is around £500/600 with delivery costs on top of that also.
Mine was so expensive due to the fact i had to get extra work done to repair them and i also got added extras like i have said above ( also got red anodised caps along with full strip down and powder coating along with the Twingo R1 Scrapper Seals drilled in.)

Any photographs of the R1 dust caps fitted?

Wont see the actual shocks and Twingo R1 scrappers until i get them tomorrow.
These are just the pictures that Jane @ BG sent me today, They will be with me tomorrow via TNT so i will get a couple of pictures but i believe these need to be drilled into the shaft and then counter sunk in with a bolt kit.

What's the advantage of the twingo seals?

The advantage of the Twingo R1 scrapper seals is to stop dirt getting into the piston and scoring the shaft.
Here is a picture of one thats not yet bolted into place

As you will see from this next picture the hole spacing and bolting is different from the one above as these need drilled into place and then counter sunk. The reason these are used on the Twingo R1 is that these are rally cars and it helps protect them

Are these shocks really night and day from 182 cup shocks? I've heard they are and should be for the price! :astonished:

Look forward to the photographs of the R1 Seals, mine must be due for delivery soon. Still don't know a exact date.
Curious at to why you have not went for the Schrader Valves? as surely you won't be able to give them a little maintenance every so often.

I wanted mine OE spec with the Twingo R1 scrapers. You will see that I don't have any yellow markings or BG stickers as I wanted them looking like they are new items.
I also don't use my car as a daily and it's only on the road 6months of the year so I could not justify spending anymore money than I have had too.

Got them delivered today and took some extra Pictures along with close ups of the Twingo R1 Scrappers. (see Pictures Below)

Don't do things by halves do you, looks smart

Ha Ha Ha, I try not too but I'm just hoping my other set is not going to be that expensive.

Look great Marc. Have you got a breakdown of all the cost? PM me if you want

@Keith185 what you need to remember is i have extra work done along with getting a badly damaged one repaired and also the cost of BG collecting them from me as well as delivering them too me. The reason i got them collected is that a guy on the Trophy forum sent his shocks via royal mail and they disposed of them due to them being a pressurised item with gas & liquid so i got BG to use there courier company and have them fully insured.

I'll be sending mine off to BG next year for something similar.

I bought them for £200 3 years ago and its only now that i have done the refurb.
As i say these are my spare pair as i have still got a pair on the car which will be going into BG next year for the same treatment.

Its a shame as the black cap goes over them and stops them from being seen but then again they are on the car.
I don't think these will be going on the car any time soon as the car is off the road now so if anything its 182 Cup shocks and i will get the other set done.
Also going to be buying new rear sachs dampers with polybush mounts (these ones below)

Totally agree, wish me luck when trying to DIY it myself. Should be fun.

I've got the black series mounts with my rear Sachs.
Fitting them this winter. I'll let you know if there is any difference at all.

The stickers from BG are not Renault stickers, they are the Sachs version .
Look at the stickers on the dampers and then look at yours

Sachs damper sticker with different part number and info.

RenaultClioTrophyMarcRiddle021.jpg

I did however speak to Jane at BG and got this response

Hi Marc
I can confirm that the stickers we use are correct. The
different numbers relate to left and right.

The only other observation is that Sachs rebranded their logo to ZF, so the
'Sachs' logo is not current.

I hope this helps, but if you need to contact us further, Ben is back from
holiday next week.

Kind regards,
Jane

ohh wonder why they have different ones, the ones I have are the first and 2nd pic you posted maby they have the twingo R2 part numbers?

Not they are genuine part numbers for the Clio dampers as I spoke to Jane on the phone regarding them and then e-mailed her the pictures.

I have the original set (first picture) still in the envelope brand new from Renault and I have three sets (front and back) of the second set in the second picture with another 2 pairs of fronts that I have for sale.

I don't have any of the ones that BG have and BG won't sell them either as I have tried and tried and tried again.

When I send my other set away to get done I willask for no stickers and I will put the OE Renault ones on that I have

From what I've seen, I don't rate CF for refurbing these. This year alone, I have seen x3 Trophys with there work all leaking from fly he main seal... Not one set over 9 months old.

  Listerine & Poledo
Mental costs. Mental.
But kudos for keeping it as Renault intended, not as Eibach/ Palmland allow

I hate to say this but i have been told by the renault specialist that i use that they have seen two sets come back from CF and they failed within 6 months on the Trophy. One of the owners refused to believe it was the sachs shock until they fully stripped it down and showed the owner.

Can of worms... cheap seals?

I believe that CF buy all there parts from BG as BG is the only authorised UK sole dealer and the only people who can get the parts direct from Sachs ZF Germany so I'm unsure if its actually down to the parts as they should all be OE Sachs parts.

On a plus note, I've NEVER seen a set from BGM returned for failed seals. I know where i'd be sending mine, based on what I've seen that is.

My point exactly @MicKPM hence the £900 invoice.
Im lucky as i have two sets of dampers and possibly later this year or next year i will be doing exactly the same with the ones that are on the car just now and if its £900 again then so be it.
I believe the saying goes "You get what you pay for"
