2005 E46 M3

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
So I said a few days ago that I was definitely keeping the Boxster this summer and not getting an M3….but kept looking back at this thread and I've ended up buying one this evening, collecting tomorrow….damn you scutch!

Haha, fantastic Joe. It's always good when you've owned one previously.

On Cutters?

Yes dude, I'll do a thread now. Just drove it 60 miles home, SMG is awesome, and this has a rasp to end the world!

I've got my SMG set to S4. Much rather use the paddles than rely on the car doing my up-shifts.

///M cars are heroic. Looks really good. Great colour. Looks a little too lowered and spacer-ed for my personal tastes though.

Very nice. I miss my Silver Grey M3. It's a little low on the rear but the spacers look spot on.

Rear sits 10mm lower on the E46M standard so if the rear is low, the front is too :)

The drop on the BCR's is 20mm all round I think from standard.

It looks stunning but the front is too spaced IMO! Rear looks bang on and the height is perfect.

How have I missed this until now?

Lovely looking car in one of the best colours

oooft.

Out of interest, how easy is it to get parts for these? I had loads of perished bodywork trim/rubber on my E36 and was a nightmare trying to sort them out.

Do they rust quite often? I'm ok with the rear subframe leaving the car, but hate rust.

BMW offer a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty on rust. So I've got until 2017. Few guys on the BMW forums have had rust found by a dealer inspection and the entire car has been stripped to metal for a full respray under warranty.

A mate of mate took his e46 m3 into the dealers as he found a small rust spot and wanted it repaired under warranty. They went over the whole car with a Paint depth gauge, found it had been previously painted somewhere by a third party and sent him on his way!

Love it mate, best colour on them by miles.
Really getting used to driving quick with SMG and it's ridiculously good!

Off topic i know, but Scutch has had enough ego boosting in this thread .... ;)

What is SMG like when not hooning, i.e. stuck in a traffic jam tootling to work.

I don't find it an issue at all. Not had one single issue with it on the two M3's I've owned with SMG. Touch wood.

The SMG transmission is basically a manual with a clutch, but it has no clutch pedal. It is actually the exact same transmission as the manual, with some extra electro-hydraulic stuff attached to it. It will operate the clutch and the shifting for you when you use the paddles on the wheel, or the gearstick itself.

It does have an "automatic" mode where you don't even have to tap the paddles. There is also a series of levels you can adjust that will determine how fast and hard it will do this. In the automated D mode, there are 5 levels, and in the sequential S mode, there are 6 levels.
However, it is not an automatic, so if you put it in "D" it will do all the shifting for you, but it won't feel like an automatic. It will feel like a manual that someone else is shifting for you.

The gear shifter has a + and - for shifting, an R for reverse, N for neutral, and S/D for Sequential/Drivelogic, which is a fancy term for auto shift, no paddle presses are required. Push it over towards S/D while in S mode and it switches to D, and vice versa. S mode is when you use the paddles or the shifter yourself and do the +/-.

Even in S mode where you are shifting yourself, the system will not allow you to upshift at too low an RPM, or down shift at too high an RPM. If you pull up to a junction or traffic light without downshifting, it will do it for you.

All very clever. It can also aid with hill starts and there's a launch control function using setting S6. Hardly recommended obviously but for the crazy amongst us, it works.

General consensus is use D for town driving on setting 2 or 3 and S for spirited driving on setting 4 or 5 with Sport mode activated. I use S4 all the time, as I prefer using the paddles. If you're in D mode and use the paddles or gear stick at any time, it automatically sets it to S mode anyway.

Does look good - just had a quick look on the pricing of them - they cost more than I expected them to, to be honest!
