Zoom whilst maintaining focus?

  350z GT
So whilst shooting some cars today i was finding it difficult to get a good close photo of the car whilst maintaining a clear, focused picture??

Also do you focus the aim on the track or on the actual car and follow it whilst you take the photo?

COMPLETE NOVICE ALERT :S

Camera is a Fuji FinePix s1730

cheers

With that kind of camera I would focus on a the track and take the photo when the car gets to that point,
on a fast shutter speed.

Does the finepix have shutter delay? (a gap in between pressing the shutter and it taking the photo)

If I'm following a car, I usually focus on one point on the car and follow it. Search panning.

Also, if your camera has continuous auto-focus, turn it on.
