Sky/Netgear issue!!

  Weeman sucks ****
I've recently changed from Virgin to Sky broadband due to it being £5 a month rather than £17.99!

But, the netgear router is absolute sh!te!! Either it's broken (apparently they're sending another) or it's just rubbish, which I've read about online. Wireless has a range of about 1ft!

So, I've got perfectly good 3com router that was fine before but can't get it to work. Tried inputting the username/password etc from instructions i read on a forum but nothing. Oh, and then my housemate decides to factory reset the router!

Anyone know anything that might work?

Cheers

Humn. Mine worked straight out of the box, router is upstairs and laptop is in the dining room.

Have you tried changing the channel on the router?

Erm, I only know a few things as I'm a bit of techno r****d!

I'm getting our resident geek here at work to have a look at the routers next week so will see what happens. Failing that and sky don;t send another router I'm changing back to what worked I think.

It's actually against the terms and conditions of your contract with sky to use another router.....which is why the login information is pre-loaded into the router and not publicly available, apart from the hacks which allow you to retrieve it.

If you login to the router (use the supplied cable) with your browser and go through the settings, try selecting a different wifi channel. It's possible that one of your neighbours is using that channel which is why it works when you're about a foot away but not when you move further away.

Hi Tom, wtf are you talking about. Don't make me waste all of my 5CS non member posts per day! email me instead.

I know there's a belkin setup nearby.

from what ive read sky encode the user information in the router so when you ring up for tech support they can log in to the router? Not sure if that is correct or not....

I also read a hack which retrieves the username settings, then update the firmware to remove the sky stuff and then enter your username settings using the new firmware, which is apparently loads better.
