Painting

  Golf GTD Mk7
Going to spray up my plenum, fuel rail, TB and engine mount/cam cover. Anyone got any words of wisdom? I was thinking of following shadowness's guide on spraying for it? Would i need to use VHT on it? Also, would lacquer be ok under there?

Want it to get easy to keep clean finish as the colour i'm looking at doing will look better if clean.

Hi mate.

AFAIK they all get quite hot being shut in the engine bay so lacquer is a bit of a no no, I'd go for High Temp paint just to be on the safe side myself.

I know you can get High temp lacquer? so might get that. Think its for exhausts, so much hotter than the bay.

would I need to prime, sand, spray, sand, spray? If that makes sense?

Id wirebrush wash, 800Grit, Prime, 1200/1500 Grit, Paint, 1500, Paint, Lacquer

Sometimes I 1500/2000 Grit after paint, it just depends on the finish ive got from painting.

Paint or Lacquer?

It depends on how thick you go. I always give 4 light sprays (I from each direction) per coat and probably about 2 or 3 coats.

Lacquer i generally give quite a lot to protect the paint a bit.

Ah ok. Will i have any issues with bubbling from the heat coming through the paint? or should the sanding, spraying make this less likely due to a more rought surface to which the next layer is added.

Its more the paint that will help cope with the heat i would've thought.

The prep is all about getting a nice 'key' for the paint to grip to which helps stop flaking.

I don't see any problems with the paint not coping as the VHT paints are made to be sprayed on exhaust manifolds etc.

I was going to buy a mild steel decat as apposed to stainless and just spray it - lol

Lacquer and normal paint is fine....I have never had any problems with any of my engines. My plenum etc has been painted the colour it is for nearly 18 months and looks fresh as the day it went on.

It doesn't get hot enough under there to start peeling paint. I used standard paint and standard lacquer. No need for high temp.
