Ok, so now I dont think the alternator has gone.....belt gone?

Just charged the battery up and put it in the car, car started fine, but a few seconds in there was a screech from what sounded like a belt, so i shut the engine off.
Stated it back up again and it was running no problems, measured the battery charge and the alternator was not charging. Then I decided to move the car around in the car park and realised I didnt have any power steering! :S

It is dark but i reached down to the alternator belt and it felt very slack but I could not pull it out if you know what I mean!

Given that on the motorway the battery light came on instantly and didnt flicker etc prior to failing would I be right in saying that perhaps the belt has broken or something like that?!

Not sure with a valver but my cup did similar. \it had snapped the bolt used to tension the belt.

On a cup as you tighten said bolt it swings the whole alternator outwards (towards front of car) tightening the belt in the process.

Was an easy fix.

Like i said tho thats in a 172 cup, i have no idea bout a valver but your description of the problem sounds the same as mine was!

valver has a bolt through the middle of the tensioner that secures it. could be that it's come loose. no point asking TBH, have a look and see what's actually happened, speculation will likely lead you down many different incorrect routes
