went out this evening to change the plugs as the car is misfiring like a pig. i cleaned the engine last week, so i just thought water had got in, no big deal.....it happened on the last 172, its an easy fix.

oh how wrong i was.

if your looking at the engine from the top, the 3rd hole from the lefts coil lead was sat in a puddle of very old, dirty oil. Took the lead out of the hole and the outside of the rubber bit was now covered in mayonnaise type oil. Took the plug itself out and the thing is covered in clean oil (ish!)

Now behind where all the spark plugs sit, is what looks like a massive breather pipe bored out of the aluminium in like an egg shape and the oil seems to be coming from here.

The rubber 'O' ring that sits there looks ok, not split or brittle, so where is the f**king stuff coming from???

Panicking a bit now.....

Sounds like your cam carrier gaskets leaking Dan, not a metal gasket only sealant etc. Common on most newish Renault 16Vs (1.6 meganes suffer with this loads take the engine cover off the cam carriers soaked, goes down the spark plug holes, misfire). Doesn't normally get that bad though, take a while to get like that. Basically as you look down the spark plug holes, you'll see where the carrier joins the head, probably leaking there.

Know its not nearby but oil filler cap tight?

Tom i think its leaking from the cam cover in general and the oil seperator at the back from the way he described it to me.

Dan have a look at these aswell. Clean it all out and see if it comes backs the first thing - get your level on the max and see if it drops.

PRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKK! hahaha

You cant road test it on saturday either, i've only bolted the seats in using two bolts, it got dark! lol

The oil thing is only coming from the back, by that seperator pipe, where the renaultsport bit joins the main lump of the engine. there is not a single trace of it anywhere else.
