Need your advice

Well, I was driving back to uni yesterday and for the first hour or so the journey was fine doin speeds from 70-90mph, and got to a point in the drive when a grinding noise was coming from the front of the car (the boise that car wheel bearings make!!) so I stopped, checked, n it wasnt!

Continued down the motorway, the noise started again, I was goin about 80mph, slowed to about 55mph and the noises could still be heard no matter what the car was doin i.e steering left or right accelerating, braking etc. I drove the car to the next service stop and realised that by dropping the clutch the noise stopped, or by taking the car out of a gear and letting it roll.

Called out the AA, they drove the car checked around the car and couldnt see a problem. I then drove the car another 100miles (approx speed of (60mph) with no noise at all.

Now as u can imagine I am confused to what was making the noise? One thing I have noticed in the engine bay is that on the steering rack and exhaust pipe is grease, which wasnt there bout 2 days (cleaned off the grease that was there!!)

Does anyone know what caused this problem, and how I may go about getting it repaired?

Thanx

Pads sticking or worn out??? Happened on my old car and had a horrid squeeling noise from them

I have had a look around the driveshaft gaitor, and so did the AA crew that came out... and saw nothing wrong with them!? Recently work has been done to the LHS drive shaft, i.e a new one fitted (long story why?!!). I have had another look around and found that the grease/oil on the steering rack is also around a little cylinder just underneath the air filter, near the top of the engine block. Which I am thinkin is where the grease/oil has come from? But what does that cylinder thing link to?
