  172 Cup

I know you dont have to have a Cat to pass an MOT test but is there any literature to back this up? Im trying to convince some naive people that in theory atleast you dont need a Cat.

Cheers Pete. That seems to suggest you need a Cat and many a time Ive seen people on here say you dont. Confused even more know..

For the MOT test it is NOT required that a CAT is fitted.. It is only required for the vehicle to pass the emmsions test that is related to the vehicle registration date.

So for example: If the vehicle was registered after 1 august 1994 then the vehicle must pass the "BET" test.. (Full cat test)

It is unlikely that most vehicles would pass without a cat fitted but there are a few example that would..

See this page for exhaust system info from the MOT testers manual.. http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_710.htmhttp://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_710.htm

And this one for the test its self http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htmhttp://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm

Note this important paragraph..

"If an engine has been modified in any way, it still has to meet the exhaust emiIf an engine has been modified in any way, it still has to meet the exhaust emission requirements according to the age of the vehicle. "
