mk1 172 Spare wheel well removal

Does anyone know if its ok to have the spare wheel well removed on a mk1 172?
Im guessing it can be cut out and a plate welded over it then sealed up or something.
Does anyone know where I could get it done and a rough cost?

all 182's have the same rear end as the 172, just with the well cut out and a plate welded in, so it's fine to do it!
