Mk1 172 - overheating advice please...

  ph1 titanium 172

Hi , to keep a long story short is it normal for a mk1 172s temperature gauge (coolant) to go into the top zone (where their are two dashes) if you have driven it fairly hard, and have either come to a relative standstill in slow moving traffic or letting it idle when you arrive home ? The reason I ask is that lately I have noticied this happen a few times, mainly when I seem to have a lot of load on the engine such as air con/fan etc.. I am not sure if its happened before, i think the reason i have become aware of it is the fact that my car has been in the dealer to sort out an oil leak in the crank area - so the engine sub frame had to be dropped out etc etc...

I have checked my coolant levels which is fine (between min and max) and the fan is cutting in... eventually... the car went back to the dealer on wednesday, but they say nothing is wrong.... so basically do u think this has always been happening or is it something renault have buggered up... (again).

Thanks.

Si

HMMM. sounds like a potential serious problem id have thought. Maybe an oil starvation somewhere or the fan not kicking in properly like you said.

I drive mine hard every time i drive it and has NEVER gone above the halfway mark.

Try and take it to another garage and get another tech to look at it. Tell them exactly what you wrote here.

hope you get it sorted soon!

thanks for the reply si. i tend to agree with you (i wish i didnt lol), i am 99% sure i have never seen that temp needle rise above halfway before either, before the car went into dreaded renault dealer hands... i will camcorder the needle and make sure i have a date stamp on the recording, plus the fact that renault have had the car in and say nothing is wrong then hopefully if disaster strikes then they are responsible for it.
