Melted Lambda sensor

  PH-QUICK
Been getting poor fuel economy lately, with the computer saying im doing a fair few more MPG than i really am, so thought i'd take a look at the lambda sensor today.

Found this:

The lambda looks like its probably the original one, as well as having the weird melted by the gear change rod as its been heated by the cat by the looks of it.

So is this a new lambda needed?
If so which one would people recommend, saw Bosch and NGK in the other threads on lambda?

Depends how much you're willing to spend. I replaced mine recently and the NGK one's were significately more expensive so I opted with the Bosch one.

Ps. Have fun removing your old one. I had a complete nightmare getting mine off.

Well got a new one today from the local parts place, the one they had was the NGK for about £70, but it looks a much better unit that the one that's in there atm.

Will report on the easy of change tomorrow...

So changed it on friday - in the end i used an open headed spanner and got a G clamp and use the clamp to compress the spanner into the pipes before the cat so that the spanner moved the lambda in the correct direction.

The results:
Went for a 50mile run down the Reading and saw 44mpg on the motorway keeping to about 75/80, results were poorer on the way back, more like 38mpg but that was faster driving and its generally up hill on the way back and down on the way there.

As for power, possibly some more there, can't really tell either way as it'll only be max 5ish bhp.

The old one was covered in carbon and looked like it had burnt out possibly, so needed changing at some point.

Sounds good. I wouldnt expect more power. IIRC ECUs ignore the lambda when your really going for it because the lambda doesent have time to react

I replaced mine today - it was a biatch to get the old one's connected out/detatched from the chassis. The results are pretty definitive tho - the engine is smoother at idle and cold, and sounds less choked when accelerating. Well worth the £50 and I fitted the bosch.
