Mechanical precautions??

My 172 cup is coming up to 70,000 miles soon and as changing it isn't an option at the moment I wondered what should be considered? I had the cambelt changed at 65,000 ish and 'touch wood' all seems ok apart form a niggle with the top mounts which is getting looked at soon.

I've heard from other like minded in here that the calipers can wear out and the rear bearings go (according to EVO).

The bodywork needs some TLC from a bodyshop but if I was paying out for that I might aswell find a lower mileage example.

So, Loony, Yoz, Fred, Jon and all the usuals suspects...comments most welcome.

p.s. The engine's an absolute peach and pulls so good, changing car could find a dog!

when u change the rear discs, get some with new bearings already pressed in. That solves that one.

Oh I know that mate and have done when I changed them before. Hopefully get a set soon.

bearings can go after 40K

if it starts drinking oil, start crying!

Yoz's old engine went pop at 83K

both calipers were knackered at 60K

Pads & discs not worth worying about as they can be changed easily yourself.

A little oil has been lost out the gearbox but apart from that I'm told (by a good source) that all is ok with a little wear on the clutch.

Am I right in saying new gearboxes are an expensive thing? What about clutches?

clutch (depending on what you go for) = £90 to £400 + labour

gearbox is specific to the cup, not the easiest thing to get hold of

I know the 182's have longer gearing but didn't know the cup was different from the standard 172.

Minor tweaks. I've driven a couple of 182's and they are different. Apparently the wheelbase is longer on the 182's aswell. Along with a few other changes. It's not only an exhaust and wheel change. Sure someone in here will know more than me.

I would have thought most people had done this kind of work as it's so easy.

Gearbox probably wouldn't be hard to do either if you have time and the right facilities.

172 Cup box has an output for the speddo. Cars with ABS use the ABS sensors for speedo but since the 172 Cup didn't have ABS the gearbox had to be adapted.
The 182 and 172 boes are the same JC5 type realy ratios on the 182 are slightly longer though.
Ratios on full fat 172 and Cups are the same though.
182 has some suspension changes though different hubs etc.
182 Cup is same as 182 full fat with cup packs but a few KGs lighter as no zeons or climate etc. It still had ABS EBC etc though.
