lost the 5k kick, after standard zorst fitted??

  monaco blue 172 ..
hi everyone, just joined this site after buying my first clio 172 mk2,and am well impressed with it so far.
anyway the problem i have is this,,, i had a new standard exhaust fitted as the fist one basicaly fell of (only done 22k from new )03 plate.and after about 300 miles noticed that there was an eggy smell and the power seems to have dropped very noticably, and the 5k kick has all but dissapeared.i have noticed that exhaust assembly paste has been used instead of a gasket where the CAT joins onto the MIDDLE BOX ,,, would this affect performance if it is blowing slightly ???????
thanks and any help would be greatly apreciated,,,:star:

Well ill hazard a guess at this but here goes:

The eggy smell is from the catalitic converter... it goes away after a while and you can buy stuff like air freshner to reduce the "eggy" catalist smell. The exaust paste probably isn't doing any good so get a proper metal gasket in there, and the loss of the 5k surge will be a fauly variator and will prop set you back about £300 at reno as its a pretty common fault.

hi forgot to say that i have only had the exhaust replaced after the cat (the cat which is on is from when the car was new). what is a variator ? will it show up on reno's diagnostic as im lucky enough for my dad to work for renault,, so they are gonna give it a quick once over ????? cheers

Yea but all catalitic converteres make that smell mate... i seem to remember i use to knock on the air-con to get rid of it... also a diag. should bring it up as a fault; the variator is what adjusts the valve lift, on these i think it switches it about 11 degrees so if its not working this is why you have lost power after 5,5k mate

just did a search for variator on the forum and didn't really come up with anything ? is this really a common problem ? I'd be interested to know whether you have to have this changed or not.. I thought that by replacing the exhaust system it sometimes smooths out the 5k kick - I know that I have experienced this with my current blueflame exhaust (63mm bore) and with a previous 50mm bore system that was custom fitted. I think that magnex catback people get this as well ?

If it was a dealer that fitted the exhaust - take it back.. if you've noticed a massive difference in performance, there's something wrong. The exhaust blowing will affect performace & fuel economy.

Never seen a post on here before about a variator , i'd be interested to know what and if there is a problem with it ? I know its something to do with the valve timings but thats as far as my limited knowledge goes .

Sounds like the cats fcuked to me full stop . Some makes of cars like Vauxhalls seem to give off an eggy smell from the catalytic convertor , Renaults don't seem to give off this smell normally so i'd say its either down to the pipe not being sealed to the cat properly of its fucked and i'll go with the latter .

As thedoc says , if your exhaust does have a leak , that will affect performance as it fcuks up the flow of gases , loss of back pressure etc ....

 Think ive sorted it,i removed the exhaust paste and fitted a new metal gasket ,since this the eggy smell has gone and the power seems to to have re-appeared .so it seems the joint WAS leaking ...... thanks to all for your help :D :D
