I dont know, I went into serveral garages and explained that my car has filled up with water on the inside, and they had a look and ruled out that water is getting in, and said its the heating thing, and its a hard job to take the dash out etc etc
its a c**t of a job the whole dash has to come out, but it is pretty easy to do your self armed with a hayes manual.
i have never done a mk1 only mk2's
I have removed the dash on my mk1 phase 2 a while back, following the haynes manual instructions. A bit of work but feasable on your own. Depends how much your time is worth I guess.
Lots of screws, I seem to recall I had to remove the steering wheel too. I don't know how you change the heater matrix though.
judging by the model you seem to own (ccording to your details), I would say you don't have an airgab. But otherwise yes, you need to disconnect the battery and leave the car for some time for the capacitor to discharge

My pass side was letting in water, I couldnt see any obvious way of water coming in so I just resealed my door seals and also resealed the windscreen - as dry as a chip now
