Help!!

Can someone PLEASE help?? Ive got a mk1 1.8 16v. Ive just recently got it back on the road as i had hardly any power (first gearing it..had no power in any other gear) changed the ecu and replaced the fuel pump and filter. It was driving fine for about an hour then it started to jump in second gear...didnt think anything of it as it has been off the road for a year and assumed it was just s**t in the fuel tank trying to get through.
Anyway..it kept doing it more often and even started cutting out when i was stopping and even driving +40mph.
I changed the spark plugs and fuel filter again yesterday and filled the tank right up and chucked some redex fuel system cleaner....this doesnt appear to have helped so far. Feel like a complete tit driving it around. Spoke to Renault this morning and they havent got a clue without putting it on the diagnostics-they did say that as it is an old car (on a j-plate) the fault might not show up. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try next? Cheers!

could throw loads of random engine component names around but it dosn't help at all as they are un educated guesses without knowing the info

nah doesnt missfire and it lacks power for a split second then almost rips your head off as its picked up?? Its like there is a fuel blockage??-maybe crap from the tank trying to push its way through?

coil pack?

Went to gsf this morning and got a new coil pack...changed that and took it for a rip up the road...it cut out again. Then it would start but wouldnt pull away..revved the tits off it and managed to get it back. Had a look under the bonnet..turned off the ignition and it caught fire. Luckily its fine..just melted the casing on the earth wire on the battery terminal.
Anyway..think ive found out why the car was cutting out..the wire from the positive of the battery was touching the coil pack (where the battery wasnt secured properly). Had a look at the old coil and it had a large hole in the side of it where it had obviously been touching....hope you understand what you mean cus im crap at explaining stuff!
Not sure what to do about the spluttering..could it poss be the cat??
Have taken it out since taping up the earth wire and fixing the battery back in and it hasnt cut out..!??
