Help - Car Is Dying

Jumped in the car today and drove up the road , Parked up and washed the car.
Once that was done thought i would nip to the garage to pop petrol in the car so on way down the road the car was running as normal.
Then came to a round-about and then dipped the clutch and the "STOP" light and battery light came on (As in video)
The then took off again and it went off, This carried on for the next 2/3 mins and in that time i took this video.
I then decided to pull over and pop the bonnet.

When i popped the bonnet there was a very very bad small of burnt carbon/coal and it was coming from the alternator.
I then jumped back in the car and drove home asap and then my mate popped down and he also reckons that my alternator brushes or something have burnt out as the alternator was stinking and it was pipping hot.

Im hoping its nothing huge but i have sent a few e-mails to some garages for quotes.
Im also going to get a new battery also just incase its that but i doubt it very much as the battery in the car is less than 6 months old.

Aux belt problem or the alternator itself. The bearings inside the alternator (there's two races) can let go.

Check for play on the pulley side of the alt. There shouldn't be any. If there is, that's your issue.

The alternator pulley did look a little funny and just as i was getting home the alternator was making a whining noise so like yourself chris I'm thinking its deff blew its beans.

As I will need to be getting it done i may swell get my T/belt kit and de-phaser done also as my car sounds worse than a passat TDI with 200K on the clock
