HELP! 2002, 172 oil filter/pressure fault

  2002 Clio RS 2.0 Ph2
Hi All

I have a 2002 clio sport , the car is in great condition it's never caused me any trouble. I started the car on the drive last week and made a short trip to the shops , when I got back to the car I could see a huge puddle of engine oil and then see a oil trial which started on the drive all the way to the shop.so I had it towed home and noticed the oil was shooting out from the oil filter. I replaced with a Renault oil filter changed oil and started on the drive and let it idle whilst I finished cleaning and it was fine like this, it was when I put the revs over 3000 while pulling off the drive that the oil come exploding out from the brand new oil filter again. Have tried again thinking it was a bad filter but still the same ?? Please help, thanks.

You are 100% sure it is actually coming from the oil filter? I ask because if it was you would have a HUGE leak as soon as the engine was started. I suspect it'll be the oil pressure switch unless there's another issue (such as your block being damaged or you not putting the filter on tightly) which would become apparent on inspection.

Hi Mick , yes it's 100% from the filter as I have seen it flying out from there once I have put the revs on and it's covered the top of the engine. I cleaned and de-greased the engine and tried again to make sure, is the oil pressure switch a easy job to do myself and how can I be sure this is the problem ???

I assume you are using a genuine *913 oil filter? If its deffo the filter then check the thread on the block to make sure its not damaged (and so not letting the filter sit square... replace if required). Also check there is no damage to the block or the mating face.

Hi mick , yes it's a genuine 913 oil filter I've used 2 of them now . I have just finished having a look at the thread and the block that the filter sits on and I see no damage , everything looks as it should be. Would a oil pressure switch be the problem then or is it something else??

You said the leak is clearly coming from the filter not the switch so its unlikely to be the switch.

Something is obviously wrong though so start with measuring the actual oil pressure to make sure its not a freaky oump oushing 10Bar at 3k rpm and if that's within tollerence there's either a faulty batch of oil filters in your country or there is something wrong with the oil filter assembly.
