HD TV Questions

I have heard that some HD tv's arent full HD. IS this right?
A guy at work said full HD's are 1081, whatever that means.
I was looking at a 42" panasonic plasma at the weekend and he reckons plasma's arent full HD.

Can anyone put me right on this as if i get a HD tv i want it to be full HD.
Any info will be very much appreciated.
