Its a 1.8 16v on a K plate, but private reg, 72k on the clock. No tax or MOT, and it needs a clutch, but no problem because im a mechanic! Gonna put it on a ramp first though, because the only thing that'd put me off is if it was rotten!

He wants £400 for it, good deal? What are these like, will i be impressed?

Try £300 more likly although it depen on condition rusting arches are basically the end as noone fixed them as there not worth usually doing.

You can pick them up for £250 if your lucky with a few more miles which run so any more than £300 although it obviously depend on other thing conditon etc.

Could make for a good project if you want a quick car 2.0 rebuilt bottom end cams and a remap and it would be very very quick.

So what are the key points to look for on these? I bought a N plate Clio last week that is absolutely rotten on the front chassis, so im obviosuly gonna check that!

Also, anyone done a clutch on one? Will i be able to drive it out in less than 4 hours?

Nope clutch is a long job list time is 8 hours say 7 hour if your doing it in situeand a re any good. The valvers and Williams are a pain many garages won't touch them big engine small engine bay and none of it looks like it is designed to fit. Best idea is to drive with the clutch deends hwo bad it is I've driven a Williams with no clucth before now its just a bit of a pain are you sure its the clutch itself not the cable as they fail if it is get a proper Renault clutch cable as copy cat parts are usless same for clucth stock ones superb forget any uprated ones until you run over 200hp which isn't cheap on these cars even with a 2.0 bottom ends etc.

Check the rear arches and sills they are the big rust points. Also tail gate can be a problem along with the bottom of the doors.

So would Renault take the engine out? The way i see it is if Renault dont expect you to take the engine out, then it must come out somehow!! Mind you, i can get the gearbox out of a 1.6 Focus in 18 minutes, and a 2.4 Transit in 7 minutes!

Fords are better designed for easy work though still 18 mins for a Focus gearbox out is good going its listed as 3 hours to do according to Autodata.

Renault have a few ways of doing it engine out is one option, but noone would take a 1.8 or 2.0 to car to Renault to have it done for cost alone.

The popular way to do it is to pull it out as far as you can in the limited space using the subframe to rest it on then work in the limited space.

Engine out can be difficult and with the effort to do clutch no point, my personaly prefernce if you want engine out would be subframe off but the bolts can be so rusting that most wouldn't bother and would seperate engine and box and lift engine out then box. Ite eaiser if you could do subframe off and have a 4 post but who has access to them at home.

I'd like a Valver in white as they look like the race car ones. If you want to know how well the valver engine fits then have a look at where the oil filter is its down the front of the block by the radiator.

Cheers, you've been helpfull. Just have a look tomorrow, then hopefully get it in at work on monday. Got access to 2 and 4 poster ramps etc because i work for Ford, should keep me busy next week!

another way to take the gearbox is up through where the battery is takes a bit of time but nowhere near 8 hours i would say.

From what people are sayin, it sounds like the subframe is the main problem yeah?

Rust is the problem.
Lower the subframe enough and you can tilt the engine a bit and pull gearbox out that was in the gap.

But so many epople have givene up dropping sufrmaes after attempting and finding rust has locked it solid on.

Lol, i was gonna say ive got an Ingersol Rand 1/2" air gun, but that things so powerfull it might snap the b*****d bolts in the chassis, and then id be well and truely fooked! IF i get it, im might spend a week or so everynight just soaking the bolts in some SOS, its not as if im in some great rush to get the box out!

Well i bought it, got it for £300 as its stuck in 3rd. Im sure its not a clutch problem, the gearstick will move into other gears, but the actual box is still in 3rd, which makes me think its a linkage problem. Also, the fan is in the boot lol, and i had a quick look but couldnt see and fixings for puttin it back where it should be! Any help?!

Might just want a set of gearcables then - or adjusting if possible

Get down the scrappy mate for the frame that the fan sits on if you need it.
