Gearknob Removal

as above, whats the best way to remove the gearknob on a mk2 ph3. sawing it off isnt an option as basically, when I bought my car originally, the gearknob on it was wrecked, so I bought a new gearknob from renault, within 6 weeks it started falling apart so they've agreed to replace it under parts warranty, on condition I give them the one I bought back so they can send to renault themselves for the parts warranty claim, so obviously if its sawed to bits renault will just blame the wear on the way the knob was removed.

but anyway, as this isnt the cars original gearknob, it isnt glued down like the factory fitted one, and I've also managed to get it off a bit, so far that you can see the metal shaft of the gearlever in the gap between the lift up reverse plastic part and the base of the gearknob, but it would only come so far off then wouldnt budge any further.

need a suggestion how to remove it without damaging it any further.

cheers.

Wrap it in towel and clamp a set of water pump pliers around it and twist. That should shift it.
