Gearbox Issue

My mk1 has had this problem for a while now, even had it when i purchased it, all my gears work fine apart from 1st and reverse, most of the time when wanting to go into first it will "slip" into reverse even though you have to lift to reverse, could this be a problem in the gate where 1st n reverse seperate? The car is going over some total body work and this is one safety issue i must cover, does me head in to be honest, sometimes it wont even go into 1st and have to shake it in neutral and try again, makes hard practice.
