Gearbox hell!

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and am having a bit of a nightmare . I'm sorry if there is already a thread about this but I have searched and searched and Connot seem to fully confirm what I need to know .

I have a 53 plate 172 with ruined gearbox sat in a workshop my mechanic cannot source a gearbox from supplier but I have seen a few on eBay .

trouble I'm having is the gearbox that is on the car is a jc5 089 but they are almost non existent .

can I use anouther box ? I've been told it is the abs type speedo but am unsure (someone please tell me it is) I have been told if it's abs type any gearbox is ok ?

That's a ph1 gearbox in it anyway.

Is the car a cup? If so you need either a 129 or an 089.

If it isn't a cup it'll be abs driven at that age and you can also use 182 gearboxes that are jc5 130.

It's a 172 cup . I've had a look in the engine bay and at the back of the gearbox ther is a sensor wired in ?

Are there different types of the 129 or 089 or will those types just fit ?

that will be the speedo sensor, you need either a phase 1 box or the 172 cup box or you can use some of the early phase 2 boxes. Any of the jc5 gearboxes with the speedo drive, the rest get the speedo from there abs

If i was you i'd just send your old box off to agency transmission, who says that the next box you buy don't go bang on you and you'll be back to where you were.

I couldn't afford a refurb at the moment . But I could always send my old box off when money better

i bet there wont be much in it to get yours refurbed than to buy another gearbox

The gearbox was run out of oil and the selecter inside the box isn't connected anymore . I would say it will be costly repair ?
