Hey all ,

I think I have an issue with my 172. Just recently out back on the road after 4 years, booked oultan park on Tuesday so took a drive down to demon tweeks to get a helmet. Filled up the tank with 99 Ron before I set off. Foot was down getting to 70 wherever I stopped so 15 times maybe ? Other then that mainly motor way 4k rpm.

Trip there and back was roughly 120 miles and the car used half a tank. Seems very bit excessive ? Gets me about 18/19mpg .

What could it be ?

Fill it up & see how much you actually used?

typo on the ron , has always been 99!
to clarify i filled up before the trip to wrexham £48 35.92 litres with 99 ron
i've just filled up again, after the trip, and put in 15.34 litres of 99 ron again, i even used the same pump as this morning.

120 miles ish, i'll go lower to 115 to be sure @ 15.34 litres = 28.37mpg

still seems low to me? 90% was mostly motorway miles 4k rpm

I make that 32.8 mpg if I take the mileage as 115.

4k is 90 mph if yours is a Ph1 172 with a JC5-089 box.

Not bad considering.

Even if you don`t have rodents in your air filterbox, a new filter will give a significant improvement.

See post 748.

cheers, i'll do that.
i just googled litres per mile to mpg conversion and it came back with 28.37
so is 31mpg pretty standard or is that still a bit low? i was just shocked i used half a tank on the indicator. i thought the tank was 50 litres though and 15.37 litres is only about a 1/4 of a tank if thats the case, maybe fuel level sensor is a bit flaky.

The fuel guage reads empty long before run out.

If you press the trip meter button on the wiper stork, then turn on the ignition and then press the button a 2nd time, it will display how fuel you have left in the tank on level ground.

it's his accent makes him hard to understand ?

your mpg isn't that bad, plug it in and check wehat the lambda is doing and fuel trims etc. lambda is probably slow.

  monaco 172
When my front lambda packed in i was down at 28mpg, usually 36.

Replaced front lambda and mpg returned to 36ish

The first half of the gauge will drop pretty quickly, then it'll slow down. My old 172 would show just one bar on the gauge after putting a tenner in, even though that's pretty much 1/4 tank

I don`t know if I`m more shocked that you only put a tenner in, or you still think that`s a I/4 tank.

Was this in 2005?
