fixing the damn gearbox circlip!

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
my circlip on my jb3 box went the other night and I've been searching for a definative solution without much joy!

It's my understanding that the circlip is pushed out by the bit that the driveshaft slots in to due to the tapered cogs? my circlip and washer look imaculate, as does the diff!

also, once it gets pushed out once it creates a chamfer, meaning it's very likely to happen again if you just bung a new circlip in.

I heard the 172 boxes have a bolt in circlip, but after a bit of searching, it seems only the 182 has it! (and all new boxes now) Is it possible to fit the 182 bolt in circlip to a normal jb3?

does anyone have a pic of a bolted in circlip?

I've heard you can just weld the circlip in too, which makes sense to me, but others say that that doesnt work either and instead it just lunches the diff!

If it means I need to get a new gearbox, then i'd prefer to do that now, rather than 'fix' it and have to deal with it again in a few days/weeks/months

any thoughts would be appreciated :D

The 1*2 is a JC5 not a JB3 btw and as you've already said the 182/late 172 boxes have the bolted diff retainer. My old 172 had a 182 engine in it (F4R-736) and a bolted diff retainer as it was the end of the run and its renault parts bin syndrome, same reason it had cruise/limiter.

yeh I know they're JC5s... similar diff though :D

i've decided to weld it and see what happens (as long as it gets me to FCS! :D)

had it not actually popped out/moved at all though?

nice welding!
will learn to do that one day, lol

When mine came out, i tried putting in others which just popped out. Then had one welded in which popped out after 40 miles. New box lasted though:)
