Digital Output From Pc

I recently connected my PC to my new Cinema setup via a SPDIF connection (optical) to get like 5.1 for fils and that.

Now as per the screen shot the device is working but I cannot get any sound through whether its via Media Player or games. The closet I have got is when in VLC player I am able to select the audio output divice and get some sound (also on another note when i select 5.1 playback in VLC the sound just jumps?????)

BTW I have set it to default despite the pic lol


Any Ideas???

Also the sound is running off my Gigabyte GA-965P DS4 board.

What sound card is it?

I used to have a motherboard that output in a format that could be picked up as dolby digital (nforce2 chipset) but now i have a Soundblaster X-Fi and it doesnt output to my amp in the same way

Its a headphone socket on the sound card that goes into the optical connection on my amp but its only output in stereo

Oh and to get that working i have to tick digital output in the standard widnows volume controls under advanced

Well my connection is via an Optical cable (Toslink) so I should be able to recieve true 5.1

Also aswell I can get sound when I do a sound test (5.1 test aswell) via properties in the device playback option.

Sorted it. It was a setting on the actual AV receiver lol.

Ahh well.

I never have had a true 5.1 connection through my amp since i had the nforce2 chipset which was years ago

This could just be down to my amp though as thats quite old too

My new sound card has loads of options for the dolby digital but if i use the onboard encoder with the soundcard i get nothing i have to set it spdif pass through

Have a look through all the settings in windows and all the ones that come with the sound card drivers, maybe something you can change in there?

Are there any options on your cinema setup you can change?

Yea i think its time i upgraded my amp!

I do still get an awesome sound through it though using foobar2000 for my audio with the ATSurround plugin

Should give that a try for your tunes, it re-encodes the audio on the fly and outputs it in a reasonable sounding 5.1
