Coolant system

  Partner's Astra SRi
Ok, so my car overheated yesterday and broke down. I thought this was really odd as I checked my coolant level on Saturday and it was fine.

Anyway, had to be recovered to my local garage as I'd lost all my electrics too. Phoned the garage just now (they are family friends) and they say they have found a leak in the coolant system which needs repairing and also a new thermostat and head gasket.

How much do you reckon this will cost me?

Wheres the leak? And probably a fair bit if the headgaskets being changed as the cambelt shouldn't be refitted once its been tensioned once. Plus the labour involved to change it in itself.

You'd have to ask them to get an idea tbh as labour varies.

skimming the head needn't necessarily be expensive but the labour and sundry parts required will likely add up to quite a lot. last HG i had done cost £600+ and that was on a much less complicated engine and the parts were fairly cheap.

sounds as though the garage's diagnosis is likely to be trustworthy but might be worth talking with them to be absolutely sure that the HG has failed.

just because it overheated, doesn't mean the HG has gone. best way is to repair the leak, fill it back up, check for leaks, get the engine pressure tested and go from there.......
