Coilovers Explanation?

  Williams 2
Hi people,
Just wondering what the difference is between coilovers and standard suspension. Seems a lot of money to fork out, but I presume they are to improve handling, cornering etc. I have a Mk1 Valver, so would I notice any difference. Cheers, Matt ;)

Coilovers provide adjustability of height and damping, easy to buy different spring rates as they are a standard size.

a decent set of uprated springs and dampers would be a better investment IMO.

The only benefits of coilovers over conventional strut/spring kits is the fact that height is adjustable, on some kits the damping is also adjustable and some feature camber adjustment too. This allows you to set up the suspension exactly how you want it whereas a spring/damper kit doesnt always give you what you personally want. Obviously a conventional spring/damper kit will perform exactly the same as a coilover kit if it has the same spring/damping/height/camber values, only benefit of the coilover then would be the size of the springs and therefore the clearance for wider and/or different offset wheels.

Ok cheers lads, dos'nt really sound worth getting them then unless you are lowering, which mine already has. What would be a decent set of springs and dampers then Mark on a valver?, Cheers ;)

Dont know Matty, sorry. I have a 182 so not really into the valver stuff.

Start a thread in this section I'm sure someone will be able to give you some advice.

Normally the likes of bilstien/koni are a safe bet. Avoid crap like g-max and spax. Might be worth asking some of the valver boys what they've got though as i dont know what kit is preferred by on one.
