Cambelt 172 Mk2

  2007 MK5 VW Golf TDi
When should I have my cambelt changed?

It has just done 51k... How much am I looking at from Lookers Renault??

Anywhere else in Chester area that would be cheaper??

Renault recommend 72k miles for a cambelt change on a 172 . Costs something like £450ish depending on the dealership .
Personally i wouldn't wait until 72k , cos the spark plugs are mean't to be good for 72k also but had to change mine at 36k .
I'd get it done about 60k to be on the safe side .Plus its supposed to be a specialist job ,so unless you have a local independantl renault specialist , who knows what he's doin' its back to the dealership i'm afraid :(

you can do it yourself. it's not the hard job that everyone says.

took me an afternoon and some skinned knuckles, the only 'specialist tool' you need is a jig to lock the cams in place. i still have one in the garage if you need it?

  No more clio's for me!
Just got mine done this week at my local renault dealer, originally had it booked in with a non renault garage, but they where unable to complete it due to the 'special tool' - carbon copy - wish i had seen your post first :(. Oh well, it's done now...cost me 350 and cars done 56k. Personally i didn't want to wait until the renault recommended date due to some threads and advice on here, plus i had the money for it, so decided i might as well bite the bullet.

£350 not too bad I suppose - I'm thinking of getting it done on 60k...

Thanks for the advice

Try the Renault dealership (I forget the name) on the Wirral there the cheapest but I wouldn't trust them but there cheap. Lookers Chester are the best either that or go to GDI or Rentech the'll do it cheaper but its a fair drive down to see them.
Plugs are good for 72k belt many people have chnaged at 60k as if they go its expensive but its expensive to change and a second hand engine isn't to bad for the risks.
