Brake pads

  BMW 320d Sport

Some advice needed. In the process of getting a BIG brake conversion (325mm discs with billet 4 pot calipers) and cos the pad pattern is obviously different to standard calipers Ive got to choose a new pad. If Ferodo DS2000 were available in this pattern Id get them without hesitation, but the only Ferodo compound available is 4003 which is too hardcore for everyday road use.

Im ruling out EBC straight away cos Ive heard too many bad things about EBC stuff. BUT they can do Mintex and the choice is between 1144 or 1155. Looking at the figures they both seem to perform well from cold but the 55s go up to 700c without fade whereas the 44s look like they top out at about 400c. Plus the 55s are cooked beforehand so no messing about with bedding them in except two or three stops then theyre ready for action (like the Ferodo DS2000). Dont know if this is true for the 1144 pads.

Anyone with experience in this can offer some advice?

Hi Nick,

When I had the Audi Coupe S2 I had the front disks/pads upgraded after getting the car chipped to 280bhp. The company that did the conversion couldnt get S2 pads with the correct material. They somehow managed to order custom pads from Ferrodo/ditributor with the correct backplates and required material. They did cost £120 for a pair but did the business. So .... it can be done if youre will to pay the price!
